well, you all remember that last time i post about my xenia problem which is that they are loosing their tenticals? Well, the problem is solve. it start grow back now. the only think i did was removing the seaweed and algae in my refegium. I think that might be one of the problem. the algae in there take too much minerals and elements that is needed from the water. more then activated problem do.

I do remember your problem. You actually got them growing back? Wow, I never could acomplish that... If I understand you correctly, you feel that your macro algea is taking in too much of the Xenias needed nutrients? Are Xenias better off in "dirty water"? Maybe no-skimmed, non fuge setups?

I was going to post my own message about my recent experiences with my xenia but this post seems to fit it well.

I've been able to keep my xenia VERY happy over the last 8 months or so. I was to the point where I had to start getting rid of it becuase it was just growning at a unreal pace. I then started to play around with my tank which is a 40 gallon with a ecosystem 40 hanging on the back as well as a prizm skimmer. I decided to take off the skimmer since it wasn't really doing anything. By that I mean it never collected any garbage from the water. I then noticed over a period of a few weeks that my xenis were slowly shriveling up and dieing. I checked all the water chemistry as i usually do and nothing had changed so i put the skimmer back on the tank. Well now my xenias are back to pulsing and hopefully spreading like weeds in a bit. I've heard many times in the past that either you can keep xenias in your tank to the point where they will take it over or they will just die off, it's kinda like a crap shoot. I'm not sure I really think that though. I'm just happy that they are coming back.

I do think that nutrient rich water may be a good indicator though.

Maybe.... I think that the xenia will die off after a long period without enough water changes... this might be cause by some elements that is need for them are usedup maybe? So many the algae are also using the same stuff.... ??? :?:

Seems like no matter who you ask..no one seems to have a good answer for what makes these guys happy..I had xenia in the tank..It did incredible for almost a year then all of sudden there it went..wasted away to nothing in a couple of days. If I add xenia to the tank.. It is now wasted within a couple of days. I keep soft corals, leathers, LPS, SPS and most other stuff with no problem, Xenia It is a mystery to me.. Anyone who has some insight to what makes this stuff grow and thrive, chime in. I would love to keep it again!

In the past have had GREAT success with them until the power company killed everything. Things that helped me were:
Salinity 1.025-1.026
Keep the alkalinity up as well as the calcium
Dont overskim
Temp most liked was 81-83
Xenia right from the ocean dont do as well as Xenia that are 5th and 6th generation. Most success is buying them from someone that propagates them.
More flow the better unless you have silver tips. Pom Pom love the flow.
Small iodine supplements

I just experienced a recent kill-off in my tank. I lost two NICE montipora digitata, green and orange. The Xenia shriveled and lost their pulse.
Well, they are all back to normal now, and all of the sps are gone.
Maybe I'll take up Xenia propgation ... :)
