Or buy two young captive bred clowns and have some patience. It doesn't take much. A bought "mated pair" isn't anymore likely to breed in your aquarium than a pair that matures and become a mated pair in time. As long as you don't get two females (unlikely if you buy TR young'ns) they will pair up relatively easily.

Thanks for the advice.

I will check inland aquatics out. Mick, that is also an idea there really in no place nearby for me to get some young one's or if the Petco even have any it will be only 1.

Thanks

when trying to get a mated pair of clown fish, try to put together a pair in which one is noticeably larger than the other, they all are born females, than in a group there will be a dominate female, and one of the other females will morph into a male, and they will pair up....

Seahawkjohnny is correct,if you get one clown bigger than the other the smaller one will be the male. Its also probably going to be cheaper than two clowns being sold as a mated pair.

well that does make a lot of good sense.. I have been checking out several places.. Question...

If I have the pick of sizes when buying.. would it be prudent to say get a small and a medium? I guess making the assumption that I will be able to better match them.. especially if ordering online where you can't see what you are buying??

Close, but not quite.

They are all born as sexually immature males (although some authors refer to this stage as "gender neutral"). The most dominant one in a group becomes a sexually mature female. The next most dominant will become a mature male and you have a mated pair. That's why you want young ones - that way you are sure they are both immature males to start with. Once one becomes female, they can not turn back - so you don't want two females - they will just bicker endlessly.

Matt,

I see the site you show doesn't sell livestock mailorder... :( I believe I will get that book.. I know that many folks have their respective opinions. That was why I posted this to begin with.. I have done some research on clowns in the wake of getting several..

I just want to make sure I don't have problems... This is a relatively small tank.. And I would like to get a pair that as you state don't continually bicker and fight each other.. :)

I just wanted to pump inland aquatics again. I got my pair of bicinctus clowns from them and they are beauties. Their fish are great IME!
