You could try it but it'd be a waste of money in my book. Flower pots (aka Goniopora) have a dismal record of survival in our tanks. They will check out in a matter of months.

Alveopora (branching flowerpots) are supposed to me a little more forgiving than Goniopora. They look about the same, with the exception of having 12 instead of 24 hands on the polyps (or is it 24 and 12?) and maybe a little cooler since there are multiple colonies in close proximity. I have been keeping one for 4 months now with good success and even some growth. They are heavily photosynthetic so be prepared for that. My Alveopora sits about 12-13" directly under a 250 10K Metal Halide.

Try it. I have this for about three years and only use C-balance and keep calcium on 450 ppm and some times Lugols iodine. They are budding all year. Maybe this are the easy to keep Gonis, try this ones. Ralphyhp.

I had a red one for about a a year and a half. I sold it back to the LFS when I broke down my reef. I think it survived due to my dirty unskimmed water.

Which one?

Tongs: Prices are sky high! He has to pay for the new Hummer H2 he bought...

Pacific Reef: Ok prices, cheaper then Tongs, but not as good of a selection. Very nice people. All know me by name. If you want anything special they can usually find it and give you a decent price.

Jeffs: Pretty good prices. Good specials if you are in his fish club. Always has a special on Live Rock.

Fish 2000: Will wheel and deal with you down to the penny. You can get great deals on equipment and livestock.

Aquatic Outlet: Best selection I have seen at any store, huge inventory on dry goods and livestock. Prices were average, and they have a member card thing to get better deals. I haven't bought anything from here yet as I just found it last weekend.

It's getting there. I'm almost done with the aquascaping. The tank has been stirred up from all the moving of the rock so I haven't been able to get any good pictures.

Tongs is a very interesting place. They have awesome livestock and that's what makes me keep coming back. But they are like most LFS in that they tend to want my money more then they want to give good advice.

King Jason, IMO you need more lightning for that 190 set up. I use 440w VHO'S on my last 55g reef. Remember is just an opinion my friend. Ralphyhp

Hey, how's it going? I go to Tong's & Pacific Reef all the time also, but haven't had a chance to check out Jeff's Exotic yet. How's the quality of their fish & corals there? I usually get all my fish & corals at Tongs, since everything there looks a lot 'healthier' than Pacific Reef. -Ben

PS - Jason - Nice tank!

I keep my flower-pot skeleton lying around to remind me to do my own research [Learned LFS owners lie 8O (very hardy were his words)]and to leave the "hard-to-keep corals" to the experts and to avoid buying another one as it truely is a stunning coral. Not commenting on anyone who choses to keep them I just don't think I'm personally skilled/lucky enough to keep one for a long time.

Hmmm..I did that for a while too. My first reef was a 20 gallon witha case of live rock (45 lbs) and a 55 watt 10 K PC. No additives or anything coming from years of FO. Anyway, it faded over the next couple of months. I finally ended chopping up the skeleton and mounting my fragged tree corals on it. Which are doing quite well by the way.

Well, maybe im a different kind of LFS employee........
Personally, i have tried twice to keep these.
But at the store i am at... i am very forward about the difficulty of this species. I have many times killed the deal with many new aquarists....... some get mad at me, others buy any way....... but i do all i can, including telling the owner not to bring them in.
The shitty thing about it, is that they sale so well! even after the warnings, and in florida, tampa area anyway...........The distributors are changing the common/hobby name of them to
Sun Flower Coral........
i think its pitiful.
But if any of ya live in Lakeland Tampa area stop by and see me at
Nolans Aquarium in lakeland.
