so i have money burning a hole in my pocket, so before it burns through and falls out im gonna get an ro/di. my questions are:

1. besides for GPD what is the difference between a cheap one and a big$ one.
2. what are some good brands and sources.
3. are all filters interchangable from brand to brand?
4. would buying a used one be taking a risk in any way?

is this model any good? (price will surely go up)http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2303108125&category=20756

GDP (gallons per day) BE careful! Some are rated in how much good water they produce. Others are rated in how much they will PROCESS, and as 65% goes to waste you can see why prices may vary

I Use a KENT unit. Seem to be ok but the if your in Europe you may want to change the tap supplied as this is designed to puncture an imperial (english to the yanks) pipe and we here in EU use metric

Not that I know

Only a wet floor if you plumb it wrong or a long wait if you buy the wrong rated model (see above)

Ebay unit seems ok especially at that price

Ditto. Bought a Kent years ago over SpectraPure - work's just ducky.
I wouldn't bother buying used, as you do'nt know the age of the filters.. which cost about as much as a new unit once you replace them all.
Most of the filter's and prefilters are interchangeable.

Because I rent I can't really drill my counter-top. Are most/some adaptable to just connecting via the faucet and then feeding the waste water somewhere? Like a return hose in the sink?In other words quick-connect to the faucet, make up X gallons needed, disconnect put it away? I'm tired of lugging RO/DI from the grocery store

Don't mean to highjack your thread baron but I too am feeling this warm sensation in my middle region :) and when you do the math (if you're buying RO/DI) it is a wise investment.

Yes, Just get the faucet adaptor. Just about everyone carries it. $10 or so. Put the waste line in the sink and you're set!

Ditto what Marco said. When I lived in an apartment I had the RO setup in the Laundry Closet. Got a 'T' Adapter at the hardware store to split the cold water line off the Washing machine, and jacked my RO into that. Waste water went down the sewer pipe. Simple as Pie (and my G/F could still use the washer :D)

I have a Typhoon III 5 stage 100 gpd and it's awesome. Paid about 200 bucks. Comes with a pressure meter and TDS meter. I tested my water to .01 ppm!

Umm...0.01 ppm TDS is nothing to brag about. That indicates to me it's time to replace my DI cartridge. FWIW Spectrapure sets the standard, if you want ultra pure water and are the anal retentive reefkeeper that I am! ;) Prefilter and carbon block 0.5 micron, silicabuster DI cartridge, and spectraselect membrane (guaranteed 95%(?) rejection rate) offer the purest water for your needs.

Cripes I sound like a commercial! No I'm not affiliated with spectrapure nor do I receive any kickback on sales. Just a more than satisfied customer. :D

IMO, IME, YMMV

agree with minderasre mine is at .009 it cost me an arm and a leg but i get nothing but pure water.

I'm not really willing to spend an arm and a leg to get .009 when .01 will basically have the same results. I kept my old reef for 3 years with zero problems.

if all the parts of a R/O unit are interchangable, than why would it be any different to buy a really cheap unit without the filters, and then buy filters and membranes of a more expensive brand like spectrapure? you can buy a R/O at HD for really cheap and buy spectrapure's filters.
