My flame (red) hawk fish jumped out of my tank yesterday. I was looking for him and couldn't find him anywhere. I just happened too look behind my tank and there he was. He jumped out of an opening like .5 inche at the back of the tank. He was a cool fish to watch, Oh well. I guess I will have to find a different fish too watch. :(

If there's an opening, some fish will find it no matter how small it is. I've never even covered any of my tanks, because I've always had fans blowing on the surface for cooling. Perhaps using a type of mesh or screen material over the opening or mabe on the rear of the canopy would work. I remember buying this mesh stuff from a craft store to keep my clownfish from going through the overflow. I imagine the same stuff would work for jumping fish. And I don't think it would have any affect on fans blowing over the surface, since the strands it's made of are extremely spaced out.

Lost my new Clown Goby to a jump. My blue tang disappreared into thin air as well. Never found the tangs body though.

I was thinking about adding so screen or something to help try an prevent the needless deaths. I've prolly lost 4 - 5 fishes to jumping over the last two years. Sucks!

I lost a pacific blue tang that way. Now I use egg crate as a barrier on the back of my hood. Here are some photos:

These photos are not entirely up to date as i have added a closed loop. You get the idea though.

I lost two Golden head gobies this way. I'm now taking it as a hint that I was not supposed to have one. I was very upset because I loved watching these little fish work. I wonder why they do that?

Michelle50,

At one time I also had 2 gold-headed sleeper gobies. There are other problems with them besides jumping. They will absolutely destroy all life in your sandbed, then they usually wither away slowly. I forget which book I have discusses this, maybe Tullock?

Anyway, it's a fact I learned the hard way. My advice would be to find a similarly interesting set of fish to replace them with that don't strictly feed on sandbed life.

Cool, just trying to share my painfully-learned, minimal amount of knowledge where I can.
