considering on going to mh type . now using vho. have not heard of the iwasaki bulbs till now. do they use the same sockets as mh bulbs or somethng else entirely. has anyone used other 6,500 to 10,000 type bulbs such as a quartz or halogen type? isn't color temp the main thing? if I go to iwasaki bulbs, do I need a special retro kit made for them alone? I don't have the hard corals that need so much light and am just going to add one 6,500 - 10,000 bulb to my existing vho's. I have a 72 gal bow front with mostly low to mid light coral requirments. I've never seen a tank set up with mh till this weekend and the difference is "startling" to say the least. advice please?

Iwasaki 250 watt and 400 watt both use the standard E39 mogul base that other bulbs use. The 150 watt version, however, uses a medium base that few MH uses. I recommend you buy the 250 for a 72 gallon, for the sake of interchangability with other bulbs.

I recommand you get a "standard" (M5x) ballast for Iwasaki, just you case you don't like the way it looks and decide to go 10KK. Getting a ballast dedicated to Iwasaki (MV) will limit your choice of bulbs in the future.

I do not recommend you use halogen bulbs. These bulbs are not well-suited for reef aquariusm because they throw off enormous quanities of heat, and the spectral quality is heavily skewed to yellow.

Let me know if you have any questions. Or contact your preferred vendor and they can assist.
