I am seeting up a large (360 gallon) reef and I have the opportunity to pick up a pair of small Japanese Angels. I knew nothing about them so I did some research: I was able to find very little on them but I did see a couple of statements that they were reef safe.

Can anyone verify that, or supply a link with more info?

Thanks,

Eddi

I need to confirm which species you are referring to, as there are a few "Japanese" angels on the market. I am guessing Genicanthus semifasciatus. If this is the species you're talking about, then yes, it is perfectly reef safe. Like all Genicanthus, they are haremic, so I recommend you buy one male to 3-4 females since you have the luxury of a 360g tank. A very hardy species for captivity.

Leonard,

I am sorry I should have been more precise in my post. The fish in question are actually a pair of Japanese Swallow angels (genicanthus melanospilos).

Does that change anything?

Thanks for your help,

In terms of care, nope - only that G.melanospilos is more a Southern Pacific angel then it is a Japanese angel :)

Eddi,

Here is a pic of my G. melanospilos that I've had for several months now:

So far he has been a model citizen except he didn't like the female that I tried to add recently. I had to pull her and return her to the LFS. If you are trying to pair them up I would suggest buying them at the same time.

Nathan,

thank you very much for the picture, what a beautiful fish!

Yes, if I do actually get them I will be getting a pair together.
