Which triggerfish is less likely to cause problems in my FOWLR tank? By problems I mean destroying live rock and possibly disturbing the sandbed too much. And any other problems it may cause.

I used to have a 3" Niger in my reef a few years ago. It didn't harm anything including snails, crabs or shrimp. I was actually really surprised by it.

I still have a 2" Niger in my reef with pipefish and seahorses. People don't call them mild tempered for nothing.

is this common? i want a trigger in the worst way cuz they just look cool. recently have tought about making a preditor tank just to keep one. the niger wasn't my first choice on looks, but if he's really safe not sorta safe i may give it a shot. what about the fact that he eats alot? wouldn't the waste be an issue in a reef?

i think you missread what i was saying, but got the answer i was expecting anyway. I don't have a pretitor tank right now i have a 75 reef. i was thinking about using my old 55 i moved out of for a preditor tank, but was wondering if the niger was truely reef safe.

the more i think on it the more i am realizing just how crazy this hobby is.
how does this sound for circular logic?

i have a 55 doing nothing
i want a preditor tank
i can make a preditor tankout of the 55 and be out virtually no cash
55 is pretty small for a preditor tank
i will get a bigger tank
i have a 55 doing nothing!!!!

ain't it swell

LOL!

(Yes, I misread your question)

To answer your question, I don't know, as I don't actually have a way to measure quantity of his poo poo versus my chevron's poo poo. Anyhow, I am sure my macro patch and dsb is handling them quite well, as I get 0 nitrate.

danmhippo, put diapers on both of them (the waterproof ones for swimming of course) and check them at the end of the day. That should tell you how much poo poo each excretes.

I have triggers in all my reef tanks, never a problem with any in regards to waste or personality with other creatures. Just be sure to add em last. Even some of the more agressive triggers can be put in reefs, more "agressive" reef tanks that is.

What types of triggers have you tried in reefs? I had a male bluejaw in my 75 reef up until a couple months ago, when I think he brushed against my gigantea anemone. I'm not really seriously considering putting anything else in that tank until I can move it to the 125, but am considering trying a very small blue-line (pseudobalistes fuscus). I have a pineapple trigger (same body shape) in a 29 fowlr who doesn't bother a thing.

*shrug* Something to think about I guess. :)

Niger,Pinktail,Sargassum, and a Picasso(with reservations according to individual fish tempermant) will work. THe Picasso CANNOT be housed with another trigger unless added together(as I found out the hard way, a Niger I had did battle with a Picasso that I tried to add to the tank, needless to say the Picasso was pulled out within 30 seconds.)

Of them all I find the Pinktail to be the best mannered and the most timid. Gets along great with smaller fish like firefish, chromis, mandarin etc. Pinktails I think are a very special Trigger fish. They have ALL the personality without the nasty temper. THey are also real pretty too in my book. Really nice scales, shape and color. A great fish that you cant go wrong with.
