By looking at the picture of the broken tank I would say it was definitely a failure of the center brace. A 6-foot tank will bow out noticeably and a well constructed center brace is of the utmost importance. It is difficult to tell what size glass you used for the brace, but it appears to be a bit thin in the picture. Look at Oceanic (brand name) glass braces for a comparison. Silicon gets stronger after a few days and filling a tank prematurely can weaken the adhesion. Failure to properly clean the glass prior to applying the silicon can also result in a weaker bond.

As you have probably learned by now making and repairing aquariums is probably best left to the experts. Filling up home repaired tanks outside is defintely a wise idea. The shorter your aquarium the better your odds of success, as pressure increases with height.

From the looks of the pic, the center brace popped off from the back. The silicon is clearly in place so that might be where it popped off. Instead of the back giving, the front gave away. The front bowed out too much and cracked. The place that the center brace is laying is strange, it would still be intact (just leaning down) if it didn't pop off right there in the back. The front of center brace is still intact as you can see.

Just making an observation from the pic and giving my 2 cents.

Sorry to hear about your tank disaster. Thankfully it was outside!

Hmmm.....maybe I won't cut that center brace out after all..... 8O.... :D

uh oh! I'm just about to reseal a 240, this is getting me quite worked up 8O

I am taking as long as it takes to make sure that there is absolutely no residue from old silicone left. Then plan on taping off edges, sealing, and letting cure at least a week indoors (odor!)

So sorry to see your loss there, hopefully I wont be adding to the blown tank archives soon :)

Best of luck, Bryan

I took a closer look when clearing up the mess.
You are absolutely right - the primary failure started with the brace coming off from the back. That could've caused a sudden surge in the water pressure and the front panel could not handle the force.

My personal verdict - poor silicone technique on my part.
