after neglecting my tank , re joined my MAST group and got excited again. ON Boxing day , grabbed all the deals. Retro fit lights to end up with 3 x 20 watt , much better. Running Poly marine pad for a month. Buying 5 gallon r/o water and weekly changes. Red cyano on the decline. Purchased a clean up crew, snails, emerald crab , cleaner shrimp that stopped cleaning? ectra. Started I-Bionic two stage. Feeding new flake food, all fish contents "Omega ONe" two chromis and tang gained weight over the last 30 days. My 40 gallon really starting to look great with additions of cabbage leather, toadstool and funky tube anemonnie (purple tentacles with shocking green centre) , Prism skimmer on all the times again. Now my yellow tang has ich on side fins only, two days other fish fine. Tube Anemonnie went in tube three days now. When I last tested all levels were excellent. Any suggestions appreciated.

sounds also like maybe you stocked the tank abit quickly.

a short and temporary ammonia spike could have been 'the straw that broke the camel's back'

even though it may be over by the time you test for it-the chain of events stays in motion

(doesn't necessarily have to be ammonia, but you get the idea)

i would have taken a year to stock the tank w/what you had listed there

just my $.02

also fwiw:

tube (cerianthus) anemones need to be fed, and are very sensitive to water quality issues-which sounds like you are dealing with.

i'd try a few very large water changes, and let the tank run for a month or two as is, before adding anything else.

re: the tang-improving the environment and adding a garlic supplement may do the trick

do you have a quarrantine tank set up?

(should be a requirement for anyone keeping fish)

i would get different test kits to be sure your test results were correct. if they are correct, you may have had some type of chemical get in your water that disturbed the fish. i would put some carbon in to purify your water.

I can only address intelligent responses, so to VItz and Markymarklar to them I say thanks. I am not some newbie, I have had this tank 13 years. I am 50 year old. The tang is 6 years old. Perhaps he has outgrown the tank and I should sell him back to the store. Like most people I have been busy trying to make a living and raise a family. I have tried many filters with water. I was using a brita filter for small water changes but over the last month I have done weekly changes of five gallons with r/o water. I have put considerable effort and money into this tank. I felt if I added no more fish except for invertebraes, and snails, should be no problem. I have lots of carbon and increased the water flow considerably. It is frustrating when I devote so much time and expense to get into trouble in a system that has run without ich in years. I have been feeding the tube anemonnie brine shrimp and it has been looking great until its hiding eposode.

have you checked the water for phosphates?

using lots of carbon can contribute to a high phosphate level, if the carbon was etched with phosphouric acid(as many carbons are)

also:

stop feeding the anemone brine shrimp

brine shrimp(adults) are like candy-everyone likes to eat 'em, but they don't provide good nutrition, and can easily foul the water.

try feeding the cerianthus pieces of chopped clam, and only when its tentacles are fully extended.

on boxing day I put half a sock full of Black Diamond, seperately I am running that Poly Marine Pad which does stop phosphate. Maybe I should run a seperate phosphate sponge. I am picking up the garlic tonight. I wonder if this -30 celcius temperature here somehow affected the tank which is located near the front door. The best I can do is a 5 gallon water change per day as I buy my water. I hope that tube anemonnie opens again. It feels fairly good and the tube is quite large.

a buddy said "having a tank can be hell" he added too "crashes always happen when you have no time." I found the tube annemonie, he blew his tube and open at the back of the tank. When I tried to turn the lr around the whole tank rocks caved in. I guess the current was better there. I re-tested and found some problems. I had fed a few pieces of bay scallops that the fish did not eat. The solution was a large water change, as suggested here. I have also learned that blasting the live rocks with power heads clears cyano algae. A freind is also lending me a conch (because you can't find them in the stores here). The long term solution is to go to a bigger tank for better water control and give my fish the much needed room. So I am looking around for good used set up.

hey man,

Cold weather out+Small aquarium near the door=temperature flux+sick fishies....That't my theory.....

What kind of temperature control/swings do you have on the fourty? (well acually less because of displacement)

yes it has been zero to -20 for better than a week here, but I have two thermometers and the temperature has been pretty consistent when I am home around 75 to 77. In Arizona I guess you cannot fathom the joys of the cold extremes. Funny the answer to most problems is still, more water changes.
