Where do you place their powerheads and what circulation patterns do aim for? I have a 55 gal with to MJ 900 for added circulation. I just haven't really found any placement that I'm crazy about. Looking for suggestions.
I usually place powerheads in the back or sides and face them towards the front pane. IMO it is better to put your pumps where you want them and then place the corals accordingly to water flow requirements.
No corals yet. Going to be switching from CC substrate to a DSB this weekend, so will be redoing tank layout. Hence no pictures available atm. Just trying to get ideas on where to place them when I redo it. What I was wondering about is: do you try to get a circular counter-clockwise (or clockwise) flow going or aim the streams to meet in the middle? I have a HOB overflow that I have to work around.
Since the larger powerheads tend to have high output velocities (small outlet diameter) I like to bank them off of the glass/rocks or aim them length-wise in smaller tanks. That way I'm not digging up my sand or blasting a coral with a high velocity, unidirectional flow. You can also plumb them to a spraybar to get low velocity/uniform flow in hard to reach spots (like behind your rockwork). BTW - with the maxijets I like to use the hanging mount bracket if possible - I don't trust suction cups.
