Over here about £15 for a frag, and between £45 and £100 for a fist sized piece GT s wales
That is not too much. A frag here sell for 30->100 (Steve Tyree's Purple Monster). I have not follow prices fo SPS wild colonies.
You just got to trade with other reefers.

Great thread and tank. I'm glad Garry survived the initial scorn. This is exactly the kind of groundbreaking reef/fishkeeping I am in search of. Thanks for having thick skin, Garry!

FWIW £15 = $24US, so that's comparable. I just got a fist sized piece of A. formosa from my LFS (they carry SPS now) for $30.

The LFS I worked at got a Moorish Idol in a shipment that was stuck at the airport, but destined for another store.

They never put it up for sale, and don't carry them.

Every week, one owner would say "its going to die soon."

It ate and ate and ate...everything we put in there, sponge diets, LR, algae, brine shrimp, pellet food, flake food...everything, and he was the baby of the store. Had all our attention, because he was going to die soon.

Every week, we would be prepared with "its going to die soon."

Months passed.

Systems crashed and he survived.

He beat the crap out of other fish that were put in with him.

He grew fat.

But the owner kept saying "its going to die soon."

Sure enough. One day he was eating, the next day he was dead.

Over a year after he arrived.

Show me a photo in a few years, and I'll call it a success.

Please don't start a thread as you did (it was inflamatory from the start) and get annoyed when people respond in the same tone. You could have easily said "hey guys, not saying they are easy, but I have 3 in my XXgal tank with such and such, and so far, so good...but don't run out and get them for your 55...this is still an experiment!" A MI may be kept in some tanks, in some situations, for some period of time...but surely you could have focused on "it isn't going to last on pellets for long" because you seem very responsible and know what sort of system is required. Which you mentioned, but only after the "load of crap" comment (which negated the rest of the post).

This thread could have been much more productive if the original reply had not basically implied that everyone countering your opinion was a close minded idiot, IMO.

Aside, I think Dr. Reef has made some brilliant posts in this thread. I've enjoyed them a lot.

Particularly the one where he said we should be very proud to have him as a member of the forum, right?

Everyone is welcome in a forum. Kind of the point, no? People have said outrageous things and come to see the light. Or others have seen there point of view, which is always valuable (if not simply trolling).

Who said in this thread, "If we don't argue, we aren't listening" or something to that end?

Your post is probably the best post I have ever read.

It tells the true story of why we should leave this fish in the ocean.
Its Christmas so the LFS are stocking their tanks with Moorish Idol now to attract would be reefers into the hobby. There ought to be a law.

If you're not happy to have people on your side helping ensure sustainable use of the world's coral resources so that others may enjoy it in the future, then I think you must know something the rest of us don't.

naesco,

Thanks. We were really quite shocked when it happened, because there were no outward signs, apart from their reputation. Fat belly, great appetite...no wasting away. He even made it through some ick. We actually thought for awhile that maybe we had the exception. One owner (the business guy) thought that...the other (trained as a fisheries biologist) stuck with the mantra. He was right. It died. A little later than expected, and after doing a lot of things "against the odds." But in the end, it was true to its reputation.

Though I think this is a fish best left in the ocean, I am not entirely opposed to some of these folks with these big systems (500g still very much on the small side for them, IMO though) giving it a try. Who knows, maybe someday there will be tank raised moorish idols! But I would prefer however, that this be the sole focus of the tank, not a nice addition to a display that happens to still be living.

But the attitude here is what got me a bit peeved. People who are 'experimenting' with some of these difficult animals need to be as conservative as researchers are...and a scientist would never take a case like this to mean that, in fact, they are easy to keep in the proper system and that any reputation/opinion to the contrary is a load of rubbish. That is not the conclusion that scientists have drawn about this fish.

And it is good to be back on this board!

That was me... Surprised something I said actually made sense for once. ;)

Garry, can you expound on what you are feeding your MIs, how often, how much they seem to eat, other behaviours?

:D

It made perfect sense, and reminded me of discussion group in grad school. I typically sat in back, rarely saying a word because I was in total agreement of everything that was said. I wasn't listening at all. I was daydreaming the time away. Ironically, people who were in complete agreement were still arguing. They were actually listening to each other (now and then)...and were academics. That is what they enjoyed most :D
