i was sitting at my pc pa(troll)ing the sump when i just happened to glance at my reef and catch a shrimp float by. of course, i immediately went to check on everyone. my worst fear was confirmed. it was my skunk cleaner - my favorite - "sigmund".

SOMEBODY ATE HIM!!!!

my next question is what could have happened. did he die of old age? how long do they live? I've only had him about 6 months but when i got him from the lfs he was full grown. was he in the middle of a molt and got into a fight with "mr. pinchy", my banded coral shrimp? i just don't know. but i'm sad because he was my very first shrimp and i miss him. :(

Coral, I am guessing you saw a semitransparent meatless shell float by. If that's the case. I am afraid there is simply nothing you can do. Your shrimp have probably molted.

Coralshrimp - sorry to hear about your skunk cleaner shrimp demise. I have had mine for over 2 years and he is huge. He is one of my favorite inhabitants of the tank. I don't know exactly how long they live, but mine wasn't tiny when I got him .. . .

Meat inside huh? What fish do you have in the tank? Have you ever heard any clicking sound (mantis?)? Any abrupt changes in the last 2 days? Have you ever feed your shrimp? How big was he the last you see him?

I have 5 in my tank. All are about 2.5 - 3" long, and have been with me for over an year.

Sorry to hear your losses, then.

dan, he was about 2.5 inches. i haven't noticed anything odd about the tank. everyone looked fine when i fed them yesterday. yes, i feed my shrimp - directly sometimes. he'd swim to my hand and eat from it. the only fish i have is my clown, lawnmower blenny and scooter blenny. other critters include: cb shrimp, blood shrimp, 2 peps (one is only a 1/2 inch long), feather dusters, corals, snails, couple crabs.

come to think of it, i didn't even notice he was "missing" this morning when i turned the lights on. he's usually hovering upside down on the skimmer sponge. but i never saw him because i never looked.

i'll have to get another. i really liked him. maybe i'll get 2 this time.

you think? but why would he attack him after all this time together? i'm surprised he didn't try to get my baby sized pep.

That's too bad Coral. I also believe it may have been the CBS. Several people I know have sumped theirs.

I love my skunks, and have had them a couple years now. They are huge. I absolutely adored my fireshrimp, but a pair of nasty clownfish fed them to their anemone. :x

i would have to give him to my lfs (which i don't want to do) or something - if i could catch him.

CBS stalks. They are not fast swimmer. Although I am not positive, but I am suspecting, IF it's indeed the CBS, he may have caught the cleaner shrimp off guard, most likely when he is about to molt and rather helpless.

Of course, all these are pure speculation.

i know they stalk, i've watched him. it's more like terrorizing though. 8O

i'm hoping he just died of old age. he could've been an older shrimp when i got him. rest in peace siggy. :(

Sorry to hear about your skunk shrimp. My skunk and CB both stay in the same corner of my 75. I'd say there's just as much of a chance that siggie died of old age as their is of him being killed by your CB.
