So,

When I go into Home Depot and ask for Southdown sand, will they say "HUH"? I can't find it by searching HD site. What section is it in and what do THEY call it?

Thanks
Hal

it depends on wether or not they sell it at that home depot. it is in the gardening/concrete area. if they dont have it at one make sure you try all of the home depots around you. i would try calling. i have a home depot around here that has it, and about a 5 minute drive away, another that dosnt. so try around.

Depends on where you live. I live in a suburb of Minneapolis, and finally found someone who would order it for me, if I wanted a whole pallet! People on the east coast seem to have an easier time.

It helps if you have the SKU when you visit or call. The Southdown sand is 578-819.

BUT make sure that it says Southddown tropical playsand -- not multipurpose sand. Also, from a recent post,

"To help things along if you call Home Depot or go there the product is found in one of two places. It is found by the lumber or in the Garden Center. The Garden Center manager is who does the ordering and that is "division" or "section" 28 (Garden). "

Good luck... I just bought 200# for my aquarium and spent less than 20 bucks... quite a deal!

It is sometimes worth purchasing a pallet depending on where you live. There is a guy here in Dallas who purchased a pallet and had people begging for "just one more bag".

Try posting and getting a pool together. Or checking with your local Reef Club for some people to throw in. Or you might check with your LFS and see if they would buy a pallet. It's a hot item around here. I think any Home Depot can get it they just have to order it in bulk/pallet.

I went into a HD store in Erie, PA back in August. They had half of a pallet of Southdown. I ran and got a flat bed trailer to load up my treasures. It amazed me... there were no lines of people, nobody fighting over the last of the bags, there they sat. I quietly loaded up my 10 bags of southdown and thought I was on top of the world. I would have purchased more but my Toyota Camry was "riding low" with 10 - 50 lb bags of sand, and seeing how I had to drive back to Michigan, I thought it wise that I don't overload the little rice burner.

I have been back there again (business takes me there on occasion) but since Southdown is considered a seasonal item all HD's don't have it until winter goes away. I was told that it will come back into stock when they start receiving their spring merchandise.

Hey all,

This is great info. It'll save me a lot of time and puzzled looks, I hope. How can you beat it when you've got their SKU?

Thanks.
