Now that I have ordered my new 180 I want to get everyone’s opinion on how I plan to do the circulation.

My goal is to not use ANY power heads. They are ugly, and require too much maintenance.

With that said, I would like to use 2 QuiteOne's. Each is rated at 724 g.p.h. through a 1" line at 4 feet...It will be about 4 feet of flex PVC to the tank, so that's 1448 g.p.h which cycles the tank 8.04 times an hour.

Will this be enough? I know a lot of you have 180's...What are you using for circulation?

Anyone know what the noise difference is between the QuiteOne and the Velocity T4? They are both "supposed" to be "ultra-quite." I have a QuiteOne and it really is quite...How about the T4?

i think that you will need a stronger pump for you'r 180 then a quiet one trust me, i tried the quietone and it wasent enough flow for me, and if youre running it thru 1'' line you will not like the results.try 3/4 and reduce it to 1/2'' that mite help otherwise i wouldent go less of a pump then a iwaki 70 for good circulation or a ampmaster 3000. :)

Ampmaster 3000 is 3000 g.p.h. That is a lot of flow. Are Ampmasters loud? It is very important that the pump be quite...

Loud pump = Unhappy female...

BUT

Not enough flow = not healthy tank...hmm..which is more important?

yes the ampmaster is loud compared to the quiet one, but in the size of a tank your getting if its a reef tank you will need a good amount of flow.

I liked the Quiet One pumps untill I read a thread about the housing splitting. It happened to a few people.

Well Sire, I too happen to be planning a 180 Gallon tank, however mine is not ordered yet, and will be an SPS Dominated tank...

That being said, I'm planning on running two Iwaki70 Return pumps (1500 gph@4feet head), with them split up two ways. One pump will return through a pair of 1-Inch Sea Swirls. The other pump will return through 1-1" SeaSwirl, and some smaller lock-line, or other fixed-output return plumbing (haven't decided yet).

I expect to get 3000 gph total turnover, as I will also be plumbing w/ Flexi-tubing, and these are pressure rated pumps anyways (so they truly can handle the 4-feet of pressure).

I don't know if I will need any PH's to provide spot-flow in certain area's, but hope to be able to meet this need w/ the lock-line mentioned earlier.

OH that's great to hear Baalz. Is there other noise around the tank that could be drowning out the noise of the AmpMaster?

You can use the quiet one as a sump return and then put an Ampmaster 3K on a closed loop. I think that will give you the flow you need/want. By the way the Amp 3K is one of the most quiet pumps on the market and very energy efficent.

Does any one have pictures/drawings of how they did their closed loop?

If I am correct a closed loop is a hole in the display tank which goes to the Amp master, and that returns back to the display tank? Am I right?

Hey king jason go to my old thread called how to do a close loop and you will see a diagram and a pic of how one is done okay.

I'm setting up a 150 right now, plumbed to a 100 gal in the basement. Besides the Iwaki 100 to run the return and skimmer, I'm thinking about using a pair of ReefTechs for the in-tank circulation. Seems like this might answer your needs.

So it looks like a siphoned tube from the display tank down to the pump then back to the display tank...a

Does an Amp Master 3K have enough power to self prime the source from the display?

The reeftec contraption looks pretty interesting. Do you know anyone who uses it? Or have you seen it in action?
