I'm getting ready to upgrade my test equipment and was looking for some suggestions. Salifert has a "Reef Pack" that contains; calcium, pH, KH/Alk, Nitrate, and Phosphate. Is this enough? Also I want a refractometer and was wondering which brand to choose. Any suggestions/personal experiences are welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Reefs.org and our bulletin board! :D

If your tank is new you'll probably want a nitrite and ammonia test kit but other than that you should be set. Salifert is a good reliable brand to stick with for most of your test kits.

In regards to the refractometer...have you checked our PowerBuy section yet: http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=53 ? Premium Aquatics is offering a $50 refractometer which is a killer deal. If you want a refractometer now's the time to get one as you won't find a better deal than that! :)

Those salifert kits should be fine, maybe it would be worth it to have ammonia and nitrite kits just in case.

Also I want a refractometer and was wondering which brand to choose.

I would choose the september power buy!!! Check for the sticky at the top of the page.

FWIW, I never felt that my phospate test was telling me much. They're hard to read.

I'd suggest skipping the phospate and pH test and getting a pH meter.
