HI,
I have been looking at skimmers for my 29 gallon fowlr tank. I have seen some mixed reviews on the red sea prixm protein skimmer. The cons of this seem to be that it is to noisy, but some say that it is quiet if you have the new and improved version. I also have been looking at the prizm pro deluxe, would that be overkill, since it is made for tanks that can go up to 300 gallons? I have a chance to get the prizm skimmer really cheap and that is why I am looking into to them, otherwise I would get a aquac remora or a cpr backpack. Thanks
John

I like the new version better than the original.
The original needed constant adjusting.
You needed to turn it off to empty the cup.
And it released micro-bubbles (alot)
FWIW
A new CPR will also release micro-bubbles for about 1-2 weeks also.

However, I have not seen the new skimmer run for extended periods. So I can't say it's better.

I feel the prizm pro deluxe would be overkill on a 29g tank.

If it's cheap enough I would go for it.

I have a 29 gal also and did a lot of research on this. I ended up buying an AquaC Remora which I like. It is rated for tanks up to 75 gal, but it is not too much for the 29. If I didn't want to spend the money for the Remora, I would go with a CPR BakPak which is about $50-60 cheaper but also efficient.

Just my 2 cents.

I can also get a Precision Marine HOT-1 skimmer for around 70 bucks. Is that to much for a 29?

8O $70

I run one on a 75gal and most of the time it's simply adding oxygen to the system. If I have the system down doing something, it will make a foam right away, but then it seems to slow down. I think it's seems just a bit efficient for even a 75gal.

I do run a CPR Backpak on a 29 gal. Seems to do just fine. Takes a while to get enough in the cup that I feel I should clean and empty it. But it makes a nice foam for what it is. But then the bio-load in both tanks is small. Got to keep that cup and RIO clean.

The HOT1 can be real sensitive to things like if a snail gets into the intake and blocks part of it. Some chemicals will make it immediately start running water thru the system. Some people say that when they put their hand in the tank the oil can do that also. No foam and it simply runs water thru.

I'm currently using the ResSea Prizm Skimmer. Only complain is the micro-bubbles that it produced. It's slim & good for hiding behind the tank. Produces good foam once you get the right adjustment. From there you need not bother it till it's time to clear the collection cup. I may try putting a small pcs of fine foam at the outlet to get rid of the bubbles. Have not used any of the other models you mentioned.

I think I will go with the Prizm or a used CPR backpak, which I also have the chance of getting cheap(connections).
