I have a large backpack style skimmer/ filter combo for my 90 gal soon to be set up tank. I know i should discard the bioballs from the filter compartment as these will eventually become a nitrate factory. The filter compartment is 250mm by 120mm wide and 350 mm high. The skimmer is powered with a RIO 2500 with the overflow(underflow) passing through the compartment before returning to the tank. The tank will have plenty of live rock in structures.
What can i put in this compartment? Definitely not crushed coral which would lead to same problems as the bioballs.
Would small frags of live rock be ok?
Is it feasible to covert the compartment with such a vertical height to a refugia with a short fluoro tube above?

cheers

Consider it a very good place to put your heater. That way it is out of the tank. I also have my grounding probe in my BackPak.

I took the bioballs out and put my heaters in there. They look bad inside the tank, so I put them in the bak-pak and it works great
