I have this piece of rock heavily covered w/ star polyps recently an area on the rock began to swell.(I'm not kidding) I started poking and It seemed as if a thin layer of skin (over the rock) tore. I am now noticing some mean algae that is now growing in this area. I started doing some pruning and its still growing. I should also state that this stuff started to occur as soon as I moved the rock almost directly under the light. I should also say that I recently found that dosing the tank w/ ESV photo platonik maybe excavating this issue. I have decided to move the rock to an indirect lighted area. Anybody ever hear or have something like this happen.? What do you think about moving the rock.?

This rock, is it new to your system? did you move it under the lights because your polyps were bleaching?
I assume the swelling you speak of was something dying from the exposure to more intense light given the rock has been established in the former area for a time. if so the algae growth makes sense, lots of nutrients there.
the phytoplankton issue-unless your overdosing or using dead plankton I doubt it is part of your problem, but when in doubt stop adding non-essentials.

As it goes There was nothing wrong where the piece was initially. I moved it to make room for another coral. I placed it under the direct lighting thinking hay, photo synthetic and that's when things started to change. It actually started to bleach under more intense lighting. The rock it self started to swell on one side. I know what your thinking. I think it must have been some coraline that some how had grown over some substrate that was on the rock. That seems to me to be the logical.

Was the algae or wahtever growing under the purple mat of GSPs?

What kind of algae is it?

Then based on what I've read here, I'd guess that the GSP's mat grew over a dormant macro algae that was just waiting for more light.
You moved the rock up high, and the macro started growing under the GSP mat. Therefore the mat started swelling.

That's just my guess.
