Hello all,

I have read through the posts regarding mixing the kalk with vinegar, then mix with the make-up water. I have been tring this for about three weeks, seems to work OK. I have been using 1/2 tea. kalk to 15 ml vinegar, then about one liter make-up water.

At first I was not sure about what my pH would do, but finally after two years of fighting a low pH, I now have a constant and corect pH.

Was interested to see if anyone else has had success or problems with this method. Also from the post it almost sounded like you could add the kalk using this method directly into the tank without dripping. Could a person add directly or do you get more benefit from dripping?

Thanks,
Dave

I have read some things here of people just dumping fairly large amounts into their sump with no ill effects, but it is not something I would recommend (I mean large amounts of kalkwater, not the powder or powder/vinegar mix). They may have very large sumps or some other factor working in their favor. Whatever the reason, it's safer to drip if you can.

Ditto what Reeflion said, however if you're only mixing 1/2 teaspoon of Kalk powder to a Gallon of water, there's no need to spike it w/ Vinegar. You should be able to mix a full teaspoon into 1 Gal Fresh water. Any precipitate left at the bottom of the container, is likely insoluable.

I've also had instances where large quantities of Kalkwasser have been added to my system, and haven't lost things as a result... however those corals certainly were po'd at me. Fish didn't seem to like it one bit either. I'd recommend against doing things that way if at all possible.

I lost a clam about a week after a ph spike caused by malfunction in the kalkwater auto top-system. The ph jump over 9.2 very quickly.

Could have been a coincedence, but the clam was fine for 1-1/2 years prior to the kalk accident!

what about mixing the calk with the vinigar and keeping that solution in a storage tank and using a dosing pump drip that directly into the system over long periods of time?
