I was wondering if anyone could give some feedback on Jeffs Exotic Fish in Southern California...?

I am shopping for live rock in the L.A. area...

Jeff's seem to have an excellent selection of live rock and animals at good prices, and a nice WWW site...?

Thanks,

Todd

The only comment I have is that every time I call or write to Jeff with a question about livestock compatibility, he always seemed to say it was OK and then I get on the board and people are like "No! Frogfish should be kept in species only or shallow tanks or they will starve!" So I don't know what you make of this; Just thought I'd let ya know.

Jeff's staff are usually have good intentions (read, they aren't shameless salesmen), but at times have less-then-accurate information. I always take information offered with a grain of salt, and especially so from retailers.

That said, Jeff has very good prices, and stocks a good number of livestock. It's best to call and see when they're getting new shipments of liverock in, and to also call the day you plan on visiting to make sure he has the live rock you want in stock. He gets LR from all over, and customers have a pretty nice selection of freshly transhipped rock to choose from @ good prices. And in case you weren't aware, they allow customer walk-in after noon.

I have only placed one order for livestock from Jeff's and the experience was excellent. The corals were bigger and better colored than expected. I would agree, however, that you not rely on the staff for compatability. It is up to the primary tank caretaker to be sure that everything works together. I actually placed my order on Sep 9, 2001. They packaged it on Sep 10 and everything arrived on Sep 11, 2001. Needless to say it felt weird acclimating my new arrivals while listening to the TV in the background covering the terrorist attacks. I felt very fortunate that my stuff made it through just in time.

I'd tell you to do your homework before hand. Know exactly which fish you want and go online to check every large MO places and see who has the best price. Jeff's is a great place, with lots of selection. Being very close to the center of port of entry, Jeff's no doubt is one of the best place to shop for livestock. But like previously warned, take their advice with a grain of salt. Actually, a whole bottle of salt. Afterall, it's your tank, your money, not theirs.

I would rate Jeff's pretty good also. Just dont rely on the sales staff to be super knowledgeable on livestock. Know what you want before you buy. Coral quality is also good, but make sure your acclimation is very slow if you order from the East coast. And BTW dont buy their livesand, its nothing more than wet aragonite. I ordered a batch about a year ago and was very displeased with the lack of life.

If the price isn't written down, the staff might quote different prices from each other and sometimes way too much. They don't go by what's on the website either if you go there. For example, I was quoted $15 for a regular scooter blenny, and the website is $5-8. So if you go there, ask for prices from more than one of the workers.
And I agree, take any advice with saltyness. And If you're looking for any animal that is hard to tell which is healthy, probably asking Jeff himself is best.
