I recall a few months ago there was discussion of clams crashing for no apparent reason. The best guess was some pathogen spreading among breeders' or collectors' stocks.

I'm thinking of getting a clam, but am curious if anyone has any updates on this problem.

Thanks.

haven't heard too much about it. just got a maxima from ffe last week. They're holding clams for at least 2 weeks (possibly in reposne, maybe they always did). I lost a ora maxima (had the disease) which took out my prize crocea which was right next to it. my derasa survived okay. maxima looks fine thus far. fwiw

Lost all my clams 3 months ago. Introduced a new crocea two weeks ago, going strong.

:D

You can find more details if you search on RC in Clam forum.

I purchased several clams from both Clams Direct and Cquarium right at the height of the clam disease situation a few months ago. i was to received the orders on the same day the posts hit this board, so needless to say i was quite worried about it and called the vendors
(i already had an established maxima and crocea colony in my reef). both Barry at CD and Adam at Cquarium assured me that their clams had been quarantined, and Adam actually called me back to tell me his clams were from a different area, and not part of the south pacific where this problem was occurring. as of today, i have not lost one of them, and all are healthy and growing.

I had 2 clams for several years and both just died within weeks of one another. There were lots of little white snails that I attributed to their demise, but one always wonders whether this was the cause or whether they were scavenging after the fact.

What are the symptoms of the disease? I somehow missed all of this... (sorry).

I have been telling people if they have had a die off, I would wait for at least 3 months before restocking. IME & IMO
