My 1.5 inch false perc clown has been in the QT (20 tall) 6 days now. He goes after food, but always seems to spit it out. I've fed 2 types of flake (1 protein type, 1 vegie type), and even rho eggs (goldenpearls?), all with the same result. I've soaked them in garlic or Selcon, or nothing. Same result.

In the last 24 hours, I've noticed him keeping his pectoral fins and first dorsal fin clamped, and a whitish string is coming from his anus. The string is kind of frayed, and tapers, and has been there this morning, and again this evening (don't know if it's the same one). I added an airstone last night, just in case.

His 2 tankmates, a 2 inch false perc and a cleanershrimp all are eating and behaving fine. The cleaner just molted today.

Water chemistry is:
Ph 8.0-8.2
amm = 0
nitrite = 0
sal = 1.025
temp = 80

Filter is a small canister filter that sat in my sump for a week before I added it to the QT tank. Outflow is aimed at surface to cause ripples. PVC and fake plants in the QT. Water in QT was taken from main tank.

From what I gather, the fish were only fed rho eggs at LFS. I don't know if either/both are tank raised or wild caught.

No signs of ick. I gave both fish a 5-10 minute freshwater dip/bath 24 hours after adding to QT (too tired to do it initially, at 2 a.m. when they were added to the QT). No signs of stress during this experience.

Is the white string just poop or something worse?
What can I do to get this fish to eat?

Why is there a Lysmata amboinensis (cleaner shrimp) in your QT! Get it out of there. A QT is for chemicals. If there is a substrate in there, take it out too. Just a filter pvc pieces and a heater. You should be treating QT with copper (maintain at 2ppm for several weeks. Test daily) A good food to try is Mysis shrimp. Lower your salinity to about 1.018-1.020. When fish is done with QT, slowly raise specific gravity to that of display tank. He may have multiple problems since he is refusing to eat. Proper QT is a must to turn him around.

Have you tried Formula 1 soaked with selco/selcon? Formula 1 was specifically formulated for clowns. Mine suck it down with gusto. I really have no clue what that white stringy stuff is, but I'd be more worried at this point in getting him to eat. Grab some Formula 1 and soak it in selcon and see what happens. Another option is to use frozen brine soaked in selcon. I know my clowns also like that.

The white stringy stuff is troubled bowels. Too much change in water chemistry (was he at 1.025 at the store where you got him from?) along with diet he is not used to is causing him indigestion. Or....the improper food he has eaten since he was pulled out of the ocean is being pushed out by all the fiber in the better foods you are giving him. Or.....the garlic you are giving him is riding him of internal parasites. Or......he partied too much last night. 8O

caeco: cleaner shrimp is in case ich develops. I'm generally anti-chemical if a natural path exists. I don't want to treat with copper if I don't have to. I've heard that clowns are sensitive to it (heard one time of it causing a swim bladder problem). No substrate in QT.

I'll be happy to try Mysis shrimp, formula 1, and brine shrimp.

Sounds like intestinal infection.

Do NOT use FW dips; they only stress fish and do nothing to cure the problem.

Try medicated flakes (both anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic, we do not know which is it).

Mostly likely cause is the food you've been feeding is stale or contaminated.
Change food and/or supplier, wash your hands prior to feeding (better yet, never touch food with your hands), keep food tightly sealed and refrigerated.

The idea that cleaner shrimps will help with ich is an old wives tale.
