Whats a "cold sterile" unit for water purification

As opposed to RO/DI, I was told that something called a "cold sterile" unit was the "new" thing... I was also told by my LFS that they were sold retail.
Comments? Are these units safe, are they better than RO/DI purification and the sad water waste that THEY produce.

I've had a Kold Sterile for almost 2 years with great results. A lot of local guys have to. Instead of using a ro membrane it uses poly pads to pull out all the bad stuff. The cold sterile is made by poly bio marine. Go to their website, they compare about 40 things between the kold sterile and a ro system.

KoldSterile have been around for a LONG time, and there is nothing new about it. It's main advantage is there is no waste, but the water is usually not as good as RO, and never as good as RO/DI.

Basically, it is a type of ultra filtration with porosity between that of a RO and 0.5 um filter pad.

7E, Can you use that to filter saltwater. I want to be able to filter out alga, bacterialplankton and zooplankton.

With no waste water they are nice, I almost went with one, they have water shortages here in Georgia. The only thing that stopped me is the prices on ro/di are pretty low these days.

I'm wondering if you can just buy the replacement media pack and use standard canisters to hold them, but I havent seen one up close to see how they constructed it.

You say that RO is better? I hate to be so naive about an RO unit, but, lets say there is an RO/DI unit, 5 stage, 100 GPD at www.airwaterice.com for only $169. I would think that is a good deal, yes :wink:
If I only need 10 gal a week lets say to top off, and if I do 10% water changes every other week thats an additional 7.5 gal a week. If I only run my RO/DI for a day at the 100 GPD, that should produce lets say 20 gal of useable water a day? Or is that 100 gal of useable water a day? Cant I just run the RO/DI for 1/2 a day twice a week?
Can RO/DI water be safely stored, and if so for HOW long???
It cant be that easy, can it?

RO membrane is rated for the output amount, so a 25 GPD membrane will go thru about 125 gal of water a day, making about 25 gal of RO water. Water can be stored for a long time with appropriate container. I usually recommand people to store RO water, and DI it when needed. Many people only run their RO unit periodically, and if you only use it once a week, you don't to do anythhing special to use it everytime.
