I added a chevy 1 week ago to my 9 mos.old 110GA reef. I saw him eat at LFS and added him to my tank.
Unfortunantly I do not have a quarentine setup (I know big mistake) and fish seemed to aclimate nicely.
Water params. AOK and existing fish (coralbeauty, 3 ea. green cromis, small clown and a red scooter) ignored him at entry and throughout. The chevy looked like he would eat on the first day in my setup but was very uninterested. Since then he has sown no interest in anything I show him (form2, brime, flake, mysis, green & red algea sheets). On day 3 he started showing signs of ICK. I have since been trying to prepare garlic soaked food to feed but agian he shows no interest. The ICK has seemed to be a little better here in day 8 but I would say probably about the same. The chevy does seem to pick alot at my rock and alot on the sandbed which I hope he is getting something of value. My question is how do other chevy owners see their fish eating and acting? Mine seems basically shy and will not look at any prepared foods at this moment. Ideas???Normal???? I'm really concerned on what to do.thanks in advance....

It may just be a picky eater, once it starts eating something it should start to show interest in other foods. Find out what it ate at your LFS. If it doesn't eat that then try some live brine, romaine lettuce or calurpa.

My Chevy (I call him Chevy) was a very timid eater at first. He would only pick at the rocks and gravel. He also got ich, I treated it with garlic soaked food, always having nori available, and the addition of a skunk cleaner shrimp. It went away, but slowly. It seems there was a patch on his forhead for a couple of weeks.

He will adapt to other foods, just keep at it. Typically mine gets flake once a day, and maybe some brine or mysis (you can garlic those ofcoarse), and nori, lots and lots of nori (those sushi seaweed sheets you can get, rolled up tight). Just recently, he started eating dried kelp (like DRY WHOLE KELP) after it sits in the tank for a while, which is good since nori falls apart so fast.

If he is terribly small, I would supplement with freshly hatch brine shrimp.

Hope that helps...

Hey Trigg. thanks for the feedback. This does reassure me that he may make it.Again I can't seem to get any garlic in him because he won't eat prepped foods. How long was it for yours to start eating prepped foods? Mine does pick at rocks and substrate alot which is good. Is yours very shy? Mine hangs out in the back of tanf behind rocks most of the time. I sure hope later he will show out in the front more.

I'm gueeing it took atleast 2-3 weeks before he became a really interested in other foods. He would nibble, but not really go to town. By week 6-7, I'd say he was up there with the angels.

If the the ICH is really bad you might want to think about about pulling him out and/or medicating (which comepleting s**cks for a tang I know). I know that's not a cheap fish.....how is your tank???

 8)

Must be a common name, mine is Chevy Chaser....

Might also try spirulina tablets, stickon or sinking. Mine does love the nori, you can just rub a cut garlic clove on that.
