Which tang would you recommend for my 90gal reeftank? I kind of was wondering what other tang besides yellow would be nice for my tank?

I have a 90g, and I got a purple tang. An absolutely gorgeous fish. I have had him for over 6 months now, and I am still amazed by his beauty!

Well you could possibly put a white cheeck (Acanthurus glaucopareius) in, depending on how much LR you plan on having in there as well and also taking into consideration how many other fish are gonna be in there. Also another popular choice is Pacific Blue Tang. Good luck.

I have a 90 with 3 tangs, Yellow, Sailfin, and Purple. All are fat and happy with no problems of any kind. A steady diet of greens and garlic soaked frozen assorted foods keep the hungry animals fed and ick free. The only problem is going to be the size of them if they keep growing the way they are. I have had the other tangs, Powder Blue and Powder Brown and would stay away from them. These two, along with the Hippo seem to attract ick more than the other 3 I have. My favorite tang would be the Purple of course!!!!!! :) :) Good Luck!!!!

You really going to need a lot of luck to keep these three tangs in a 90 g tank. I had these three tangs in my 100 g tank when I first start on a reef tank. I can tell you that all three were fat, but not happy in that tank. Also, IMO, the sailfin would outgrow this tank quickly.

IMO, if I was to have only one tang, it would be a Ctenochaetus - something like a Chevron, BlueEyed Bristletooth, or a Kole, just because they clean so well..... :D

Hi Tony Thanks for asking about tangs before you purchase.
IME Emily gives good advice.
Avoid any ancanthurus species like the powder blue, powder brown and the sailfin and atlantic blue tang as they require the larger longer tanks that your 90 does not provide for.
Further the powder blue tang although very beautiful is an extremely difficult tang to keep even by experts. Most often they up and get diseased for no apparent reason and die often taking their tankmates with them.
I would say the kole is the best for your tank or the yellow. The purple is a beautiful fish but very aggressive. If it is your choice only put her in as the absolutlely last fish.
Take a look at www.wetwebmedia.com/tangs,.htm which will give you excellent information on keeping tangs and in particular which ones to avoid.
Remember never never buy a tank online as you cannot see what fish you are buying. You need to see the fish eating. Do not believe the LFS if they say it just ate. It must be plump, free of spots or tears and alert with clear eyes. Anything less than that, pass on the fish as there will always be another.
Avoid buying any tang which is caught in the Phillipines or Indonesia as the chances are high that it was cyanide caught. Ask to see the country of origin of the fish you buy. Soon we will all be able to buy certified net caught tangs so you might want to wait a while.
Lastly do a seach under garlic extract and follow the feeding regimen. Garlic, IME, acts as an ich preventative and should be used when adding any tangs as they are often ich magnets.
Good Luck

Hey R33f_$hark
The correct name for that fish is now A. nigricans, but you should choose the similar but easier A. japonicus anyway.

For smaller tanks I like the mimic tangs- there are 3 nice color varieties to choose from (alth I only see 2 of them) and they don't get too big and seem to adapt comparatively well to a smaller environment.

I have a Scopas in my tank(3 inch) - he loves to "flash" - although he doesnt like it when people are up close to the tank, he mostly just cruises around with my coral beauty...

I agree with dan on A. japonicus but disagree with Dan on the Mimic tang.

Mimic tangs grew to be a large tang (not small like yellow or purple tang). There color also change to a greenish brown that is not all that flashy. I got one that grew from 1.75 inches or so to 8 inches after 3 years. My Mimic tang did great until he change to adult coloration. He have streamers on his tail now and always pace my tank. He have loose some weight also because he does not spend time eatting like he was before. I think they are reef fish as a juvenile but more open water fish as an adult. Either that or he is trying to find a mate. I amd in the process of catching hime to donate him to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Mimic tangs have streammers on their sickle shape tail as an adult. Fish with streammers are often open water fish IMO. IME (I only have one Mimic tang) they don't do that well in aquarium as adult. Keep in mind that my aquarium is a 450 g tank. I have three other tangs in my tank.

The one I had and those I've seen have been mostly immature so maybe your advice is better on this.

I have seen a couple of adults and do like how they look however. Recently I saw one at a store that was quite small but had adult coloration and looked particularly nice- I think from its coloration it had changed from the uncommonly seen half-black mimic...

I have a 155 gal long and have a blue hippo and naso tang in my tank. I am not sure if your tank is big enough for a naso, but I LOVE mine. She is so sweet and knows the difference between me and someone new in the room (she hides). When I feed her stomach turns yellow and will follow the glass all around the front of the tank. I originally got the tank for the hippo, and love him also, but she is just special. I can actually sit in front of the tank and she will swim up and watch me watch her. :)

Im not sure your tank is even big enough for a naso let a lone mine. Though I do love these tangs, especially the blonde naso's.
