I bought this pair of Bangai's a few weeks ago. I hoped that they would be a mated pair, but it is difficult to tell the male from the females. Anyway, I took the LFS's word for which was which and brought them home about 3 - 4 weeks ago. The swam together for for the first couple of weeks. About 2 nights ago I noticed that they weren't hanging out together anymore. In fact, they were staying at opposite ends of the tank. Hmmm. Now I suspect the they may be the same sex. Today I come home and both have vanished. My wife says she saw one being eating by the crabs. No trace of the other.

Any ideas on why two heathly fish would disappear? Could it be that they fought to the death??? I'm confused. I've lost fish before, but never two of the same species in the same day with no sign of what happened?

There are to many variables to list. How about narrowing it down for us.

Such as:

Tank size
Livestock
Filtration
Is the tank covered?
and on and on.....

Louey,

I'm beginning to think there is some disease that could be killing 100s of wild imported bangaii cardinals. I been trying to get some in for breeding purposes and I have had extremely high loses. It appears to be some type of bacterial infection to me. They seem healthy for a week or two and then all go down about the same time. Buy tank raised if you can find them.

Dizzy brings up a good point. I wonder if it could have to do with the method of collection, juicing them would seem the most likely way to extract hundreds of small fish from a huge pointy urchin, but i hope that's not the case. I don't believe i've ever read anything about the collection of banggais before, i'd be interested to know how they do it.

If they were of the same sex it's definitely not a bad call to say that they beat the crap out of eachother and the crabs took advantage of the severly weakend combatants.

Yes.........it is a fish form of A.I.D.S and was passed on to them by male homosexual fish. You probably had a Gay Pair.......that was infected. You can spot them by there limp fins...and lack of interest in female fish. They are also constantly redecorating there living space. None of my critters are gay..........only my soon to be ex wife.wait she is bi-sexual. Well.....Glad I could be of help........anytime. Really! :!: :!:

My tank is a 75G reef that is over two years old using the berlin method and a skimmer. The other fish are one percula clownfish, 2 chromies, one manderin, one lawnmower blennie, and various snails, 10 scarlet crabs, one large sally lightfoot crab, and one hitcher crab that I have only seen once and couldn't positively identify. The tank is cover with a screen across the back.

I also just received 3 Bangai's 1 died with in the first 3 days the other just died yesterday I noticed the day before that it had what looked like blood on the side fins and the back fin. I ordered these on line not from my LFS. . . .I was thinking the same thing. How do they collect these? I am now down to one and he/she is still not eating. Have only had them for a week.

I just assumed that they were captive bread. I thought this species was so easoly bred that they were no longer imported.

If I decide to try another pair I make sure I get a captive bred pair.

Sorry, I know this is a joke and I'm supposed to be laid back and enjoy it, but this is very offensive. I think it should be removed.

I third the motion. Bangbang, keep your stupid comments in the sump. This is two threads today that you have given ridiculous and/or comical advise.

Inappropriate and in very poor taste IMO!

Personally I dont find it offensive. I do however believe that 90% of bangbangs posts ore a waste of my time. I have noticed this since he joined. These type of posts are fine in the sump, but if I had just lost a tank inhabitant, the last thing I would want to see is some spaz puking this garbage on my thread (IMO)

Well, I lost my first Banggai very quickly, in about a week, he never ate after acclimation. it was the only fish I lost.

In response to bangbang and others. Try losing a family member to a disease and then see how it feels to have someone make fun of it in a fish forum. Trust me, I'm not a wimp.

Who made fun of your loss of a family member? It certainly was not me. I would never do that.
