I thought these fish were bred in captivity. Why must they be wild caught? In my opinion it was a problem with acclimation......and they were unable to adapt to the change. They must have been shocked in some way.

well I got home last night to find my last one dead. So that counts all 3 bangai's dead in less than 2 weeks! All shipped together, I ordered them on- line from FFexpress all other fish in the tank are fine I tested the water after ever death and they all came out with in params. . .. I can only be the way they were caught.

CG,

You mention that at least one of yours didn't eat. IME, this is critical in getting a Banggai to "settle in." What were you feeding? Again IME, the best thing to get Banggais eating is frozen mysid shrimp. Ocean Nutrition has some under one of their brand names (fish yums, or some such). PE (Piscine Energetics) has the "gold standard" (at least currently) in frozen mysid.

Once I've gotten a Banggai eating with frozen mysid, I've found them amenable to Ocean Nutrition's frozen Formula 1, Formula 2, and Enriched Brine.

I am fairly new here and enjoy learning about better reefkeeping and I also get a kick out of some of the humor injected into a somtimes bland conversation. I happened to find Bangbang's comment on the mysterious missing cardinalfish so funny that I almost laughed out loud. I do know that when I don't find a comment funny, I skip it and read the next reply without whining that it should be taken off.
Maybe KParton should make a list of things he/she finds offensive and post it so we all know what we can or cannot joke about. Then maybe we can rename the forum "KPatron's Reef Dictatorship"

Thankyou Will......maybe it is the Michigan water quality that makes us this way. LOL I will never order fish online. The shipping costs do not justify it.....in my opinion. I have been qable to find anything I want at the LFS's that I go to. I also know some people at one of them.... :D The Pet Supplier in White lake. They are located at Duck Lake Road and M-59. I purchase most all my livestock and liverock there. If i need something not in stock I order it through them and get very reasonable prices. The other place I often get stuff is Aquanest just a mile or so from the Silverdome at South Boulevard. I have been checkin out Moby dick's now too. Boought a Spiny Star From them that is doing great. I just added an Emerald Crab today from The Pet Supplier. They had somme real neat Decorator Crabs there. I almost bought one of those............one was about 4 inches. Have Fun!

Here are 3 sources I have found selling tank raised banggais:

http://www.aquatouch.com/live_stock.htm
http://www.inlandaquatics.com/prod/tr_fish.html
http://www.acmereef.com/marine_fish_for ... tank_.html

I have not done business with any of these companies so I cannot speak for their service or quality of fish. Chances are if they aren't sold as TR they are probably not. TR usually commands a slightly higher price but very well worth it IMO. TR banggais will eat almost any meaty foods while, as mentioned previously, some wild-caught never do.

By most account this fish is one of the easiest marine fish to breed. Banggais come from a very specific, relatively small area. Many have said that this fish is endangered in it's natural habitat due to over-collection for aquariums. IMO there are very few reasons to purchase a wild caught Banggai (ex. new breeeding line). HTH sway someone to buying TR instead of wild caught :D

Give me a break. It is not offensive. I think you guys are oversensitive.

You got that right................I forgot that some of these people have not lived long enough to develope a thicker skin.

Louey/CG,

Have you seen your Bannggai eating? Mine never look at flakes or dry fish food. Only eat frozen Mysis or Brine shrimps.

I had Bannggai twice. 1st time bought 3 & 2nd time bought 2. For the 1st patch, 2 of the 3 gang up & bite the hell out of the 3rd one. 3 days later the remaining 2 lived for about 6 months. Perished due to an outbreak of ich in the tank. The 2nd patch lived for a week. I always thought that the 2nd patch died because of poor water param. Now I wonder.

IMO, Banggai should be bought in pairs & they are consider hardy.

I currently have 3 5month old banggai's and they are all doing great, eating anything and everything I throw in the tank, swimming all over the place, really active at night. I got them a few days before Christmas from a personal tank. I also got 3 5month old Oc. clownfish. He breeds them.

I purchased two from the LFS a while back, but one died the day after I get them and the other waited 5 days. I think he wouldn't eat, even though it sure looked like he did at the LFS.

Mine ate form the get-go. So I'm still learning towards them being the same sex and a deadly battle must have happened overnight. I can't think of any other reason a healthy, well adjusted pair of fish, would both suddenly disappear on the same day. What is a shame is that I have a FO tank that I was going to move one of them into should they start bickering. I never had the chance!

This is interesting as I had some similar experiences in getting my initial pair of banggais several years ago. I ended up going through about 4 or 5 before getting a pair matched up. I don't think the problem was fighting but possibly acclimatization or other issues.

I've now raised and sold well over 100 baby banggais so I don't feel near as bad for the 3 or 4 that perished originally. For me I am able to sell them locally so it just doesn't seem worth the time and effort to sell them online. Reading various threads it seems there are places where the local market is saturated and typically they just quit trying to raise them. The problem is that it's not like SPS frags where one individual will buy 9 or 10 frags and make shipping a little more reasonable per item. Overnight shipping on 2 baby banggais just doesn't seem to be worth it to very many people.

Once I get my tank where I want it and start fragging my SPS on a regular basis I will probably offer baby banggais for sale along with frags but for now the LFS will buy all the babies I can get them.

Nathan,

Do you know anything about the average life span of a tank raised banggai? Actually, more specifically, how long can the fish live in captivity assuming ideal conditions?

Can you point me to any good sources of info regarding breeding these beautiful fish?

Thanks!
