I woke up this a.m. just after my actinitics kicked on. I thought things were awfully quite. Indeed, they were. The Rio 1400 on Remora Pro hangon (55 gal FOWLER tank) had simply lost it's prime and was not pumping. That is my only source of aeration and filtration. I have LR and LS. I quickly got up, pulled the Rio off the skimmer, shook it around the tank. She fired right back up. But obviously, the potential for disaster.......on my, I don't even want to think about it.

I've had the Rio lose it's prime due to power outages before. And I always hang my old CPR BakPak on the tank when I'm going to be gone for any period of time for backup. The Rio 600 with that skimmer, never lost it prime.

I know I get put a Supreme Mag Drive 3 on the skimmer, but looking at the GPH ratings before I decided against it. Now I have to ask are they more dependable than the Rio 1400? Or does anyone have any other "backup" ideas?

I used to have that exact problem with my Rio. Every single time I cleaned the skimmer or unplugged the pump, it would not start -- NO execptions. I would have to disassemble the pump and turn the impeller and then reassemble it. As soon as I would plug it in, it would fire right up, but if I unplugged it again (even within a minute), I would have to take it apart all over again. After getting fed up with the pump not restarting, I finally upgraded to the Mag 3 for the skimmer. It worked way better then it ever did with the Rio. The Mag is a little bigger so you will need the upgraded overflow skimmer if you are currently using one, but other then that, it was the best upgrade I made on my Remora Pro. Do a search and you should be able to find several past discussions about the performance after upgrading it. Remember, you are putting a LOT of head pressure on the pump when you connect it to the skimmer, so the two pumps actually perform quite comperable.
