65 gallon tank ...up and running for approx. 6 months....various soft and few hard corals doing well for approx. 3 - 4 months...fish= six line wrasse, (2) maroon clowns, percula clown For the past two months i have been trying to sucessfully introduce an angelfish (flameback, flame, coral beauty) but they each have perished within 3 weeks...I'm wondering if the strong water current and high tank cycle rate affect these fish....are they sensitive to this type of environment? would tangs be a better species of fish? looking for a colorful and hardy specimen...any rec's?

My royal gramma is a very cool fish now that it is over its initial hiding. He comes out a lot now.

Did your angels eat ok? I heard that they can be difficult to get to eat prepared food. I have one that eats like crazy, but I made my LFS feed the 4 he had in and this is the only one that would eat. So I bought him. He has been with me for about 9 months now. I know you should check to see how all fish eat at the LFS before you buy them, but from what I have learned, the angels especially.

what else is a flame back called is it a fireball angel? is it a centropyge sps? as in britain our fish sometimes called differant things? was there any bickering between them as a 65 gallon tank not very big for keeping multiple angels especially all centropyges?

Probably getting beat out by the maroons. Most of those angels you've tried are some of the hardiest one's available. I would esp. consider this if the maroons were a mated pair.

Your best bet may be something like a royal gramma as earlier suggested. Although I'd also think why add another fish? You've got a decent load in a 65 for a reef tank. Just my 2cents.

How often were you feeding.
My Flame(Centropyge loriculus) is doing very well in a 72 aga bowfront.
But, I had to increase my feeding to almost daily to keep him chubby.
Then, I got a Scopas tang, and needed to feed daily. (sometimes I don't think that's enough for him).
Anyway, angels and tangs like that need alot of food. I can actually see my tang loose mass if I don't feed for 2-3 days.

Ground hog day again? as tangs and centropyge angels herbivores you should be feeding green matter as well? all my fish are fat? i dont beleive in starving them to improve water conditions, feed lots you will see healthier fish and change more water thats my philosophy?

I lost a Bicolor and a Flame in a short time..the Bicolor went byebye within about 4 days.the Flame in about two weeks. I am" Angel Shy" now especially at 35 and 50 bucks US money. I am sticken with the "easy fish" now. I actually had two LFS people tell me to stay away from Angels of any time. I think mine died because of a change in PH......it get low to 7.8 sometimes. I have to use a Buffer to keep it stable. When I checked the water there was only a small amount of ammonia probably due to the increased bioload after adding the fish. Not really enough to harm them in my opinion. If it was the small spike.......then I surely will never get another Angel.....and certainly not a Butterfly Fish. I think these fish are so sensitive to water chemistry changes they should be left in the Sea. Just my opinion..for now. Have Fun!

Bangbang, I 'll have to disagree with you on this. I've had a flame angel in my 75 for 1 1/2 years, he's been in when a butterfly got ick, and he never recieved it. He's also been through some nasty salinity changes, due to a variety of problems. Although now he looks unhappy the tank has stablized for about 9 months  . I think there's an aggression thing involved in the original posters tank, established maroons clowns (esp a pair) can be very nasty to newcomers.

Thats the problem.....We "think" we may have the solution to the problem but do not know for a fact that we know what is happening to our fish. My pockets are not full of cash so I will opt for the more reliable and "safe" inhabitants for my Reef. Trust me ......I can identify with what you are saying but do not have the "coin" to try this anymore with Angels..at least not for Now. Next time I will try C.Argi. Have fun! :?

Bangbang, I found that with flame angels. I had the best luck introducing them when they were small/young. Not over 3 inches, they tended to have problems aclimating for me. This might work on other centropyges (true pygmy's are tinier of course).

Could it have been cyanide caught? I got a flame a long time ago form petco and it died within a few days. It never ate and didnt last long.
