I recently set up a 65 gal reef tank (6 months) and built my own fan-cooled light hood. It consists of two 50/50 coral life 35 watt bulbs and (1) 4500 kelvin 150 watt bulb...from reading lit. I understand that a kelvin rating of atleast 5500 Kelvin is suggested for corals to growadequately...this bulb came with the fixture and i figured that i would try it out...corals seem to be doing well..my question is, would i see any significant improvement with a better cri rated bulb such as a 6500 kelvin?

a 6500k bulb should give you better results-not just for the corals, but for your eyes as well-much less yellow cast :D

4300k is to low. 6500k is slightly better but is still not pleasing to the eye, still very yellow. Now 10.oook will give you the best of both worlds, good quality white light and a good portion of blue.
Arcadia in britain have just brought out a new bulb 14000k which they have managed to keep the brightness, but with giving you a large portion of blue, my corals love it. check out the look of the bulbs on GT'S tank on this discussion hope to have helped
