I just aquired a lovely speciman of anthelia, 48 hours ago. After 24 hours the colony opened quite a bit, but today not so much. How long does this species take to acclimate? My water conditions are near perfect, all specimans thriving. I placed the anthelia in high light (VHO) and high water current.

Please advise, I appreciate this board so much, although I usually "lurk".

TIA

Hey there Hermit,

Anthelia extend due to flow, lighting, and other characteristics. I had my anthelia in a surprisingly large amount of flow, and it seemed to extend further. I have a few patches left that are in lower-flow area's, and they seemt to not open up so much. Maybe point a powerhead in their direction, see if tehy perk up any.

It is merely a figure of speech. I am superstitious. Figure if I say perfect, I'll jinx everything.

Also, the only "perfect" water conditions are in the oceans!

Hey, I am one of the old old timers. We used to haul water up from the ocean to fill our tank. Those were the days!

That must have been a real b!tch carrying that water from the ocean to WI. Now that's dedication!

The technology today is awesome. I am always amazed at how far we have advanced in keeping both fish and especially corals. I had very good results with buckets of ocean water. I lived in Hawaii and in fact that is where I got absolutely HOOKED on SW fish (after snorkeling and swimming, literally, into a whale) and that obsession has remained all my life to this day.
However in keeping corals there is no comparison to then and now.
Yes, carrying all those buckets was a back-breaking chore, but a labor of love I assure you. Just as todays hobbyists have their own versions of "chores". But dedicated aquarists perform these daily, weekly, monthly duties for one universal reason: Our love and pure admiration for the animals we keep!

Being semi-retired now is a big, BIG plus!

Thanks for inquiring,
Hermit
