I have always wanted a succesfull reef tank. And I feel i have achieved that to a degree but at a price. Being very skeptical of my own skills I started off like most people do, I bought corals that are easy to keep... yellow polyps, green metalic mushrooms, xenia, and zoanthids. As I was succesfully with these I bought more challenging and interesting corals... Acropra, torch coral, green open brain.
This is where my problem comes in, as the years past I've been so succesful that my yellow polyps have become a plaque along with my xenia and mushrooms.
The xenia I manually removed to the point of almost no existence and though I occasionaly see a xenia now and then it is easy to keep in check.
The mushrooms took over 1/4 of my tank but I feel these too can be manually removed and controlled like the xenia.
The yellow polyps on the other hand are covering about 60% of my LR to the point where they are harming my Acropora and other corals. There are way to many to remove by hand and although the torch coral has been placed in the tank to keep them at bay, they detach and float around the tank till they can root again.
It has gotten to the point where I don't even want to look at my tank anymore.

Possible solution I can think of are:

1. Remove infected LR and replace (costly)
2. Remove LR and place in rubbermaid bins with heaters and ph. With no light for 2 weeks ( I think this would work)
3. Add a natural predator for yellw polyps (is there such a thing?)

Anyone have any other suggestions or comments on some of my ideas?

Tank is
75G rr w/29g sump mag9.5 for return
80lbs LR
150lbs LS
440w VHO
Sal 1.024 Temp 78F Amm 0 NO2 0 NO3 ? Alk 3.2mg/l Calc ? (ran out)

I have tried to sell the rocks with polyps as frags to the lfs, but they were not interested. But maybe they will go for what you suggest and trade me fresh LR.
I will stop by this weekend and see if that is another option to me.

Do you think placing in a bin in the dark for a couple weeks would work as well?

This would be my last resort. It will cause your rocks to start curing and you will loose a lot of life on the rocks.

MY LFS charges an arm and a leg for rocks like that- maybe you should try another place...

Post it in the for sale section?

If you were to trade it in to the LFS, keep in mind you are now competing with the wholesalers. That means the price you get is what they pay for it.
On the other hand, if you're gonna spend some money there, you may get a better deal.

Also, call first. Managers hate when people show up with a trade unannounced.

So pretty much, everyone is in agreement for selling the "infected" LR.

OK, any lfs from New Hampshire out there interested? :D

i tries removing my overrun rock. what i found out is that mushrooms and polyps are in all kinds of lnicks and crannies. i thought my tank was cleaned out. 2 months later mushrooms galore. i finally just set up another tank for my acros. luckily my lfs pays me for my zoos, and shrooms. perhaps a second tank or a tear down is in order

Good News :D :D
I called a lfs I use occasionally and they were interested in the LR w/polyps. So I took all the LR w/polyps and my green mushrooms while I was at it.
I had about 30lbs of LR. The lfs gave me an even trade of LR for my 20lbs LR (the large pieces with only a small portion of polyps or mushrooms).
The other 10lbs of LR were good pieces covered w/polyps or green mushrooms, so I got store credit for those as corals.

The only bad thing was I had to rearrange my entire tank. Took me 2hrs and I'm still not happy with the rock work  o well

Once things settle in I like to get some more acropora and montipora.

Thanks for everyones help.

Well I must say that your tanks are in pristine condition for that amazing growth. Secondly I agree that the excessive growth is not a problem. It is something to be capitolized on. Look at the guy from Logical reef. He has zooanthids out the ---- and he sells them for 50 bucks a rock. I think you just need to find a proper avenue for making money. Also tell your LFS to f off. They are always so dirty and criminal and try to rip people off because you want someting now and are impatient.
