I have been researching this and I need to get a skimmer ASAP.

Remora or Back Pack for 46 Gallon ?

Or other option?

What kind of filtration are you using? If you have a sump, I would go with a BERLIN skimmer which is available through (Red Sea Fish Pharm) the best!

Remora Pro is the best hang on the back that is on the market. I wouldn't put a BakPak on a tank that is bigger than 20 gal.

You're sumpless, right? That's why you want the hang on skimmer?
I wouldn't get either the Remora or BakPak. I think they're both too small.

I have a Remora on my 37 gallon tank. I think it does a great job. I have 40# of LR, and a 4" sand bed. I have one peppermint shrimp, about a dozen snails, and one crab. From the beginning, my water parameters have been nothing less than excellent, even after adding the rock. I suspect I would have had to test every hour to chart the ammonia spike.

I have no fish yet, my goal is a half dozen seahorses, so it has yet to be seen what the chemistry will be like after adding the fish, but, my feeling is there won't be any problems. I started feeding the tank about three weeks ago - I feed pretty heavy every other day. The water chemistry remains excellent, my critical numbers are <0 and have always been that way since the beginning. It you can't or don't want to do a sump, I think the Remora is a good alternative.

I like being able to put the heater in the skimmer - one less thing in an already small tank.

The Remora pro is supposedly good up to 75 gallons.

Negatives: I do have problems with bubbles and the bubble trap they sell is a pain in the butt to afix and it takes up a bit of room, but it does cover the pump. With the bubble trap on - the bubbles are a non-issue. Also, the collection cup warped and it needed to be sanded down on the corners so that I could slide it in an out of the holder.

BTW, I've never owned any other type of skimmer so have nothing to compare it against. All I am offering is my experience with the one I have.

I have a CPR back pac on my 40 Brd. I have my tank up for a year W/LR and a variety of soft corals. I have 2 brain corals and 1 acro I also have an aqua clear and two power heads for circ. My live rock is my filtration. My live stock is 2 clown gobys 1 blue spot goby 1 lawn mower blenny and a neon dotty I keep up with my water changes going 3 gallons every other week. I have not tried the Ramora and feel comfortable with my bac pac as long as I do my up keep.

I am also debating on two other things.

1. Get the Remora Pro.
2. Get rid of the Ecosystem and get a sump. But going with the sump (I have never done this) It will have to be a very small sump to fit under the stand, possibly only a 10 gallon. Would that be enough? I would need some kind of hang on overflow box and some kind of return that would hang over the back. Any ideas or recommendations? I want to get the RIGHT setup for this. The LFS's near me do not specialize in Salt water aquariums and the ones that carry salt water stuff dont have alot of knowledge. Hence selling me the Ecosystem that IMO is no good as a filter by itself.
