I've been keeping freshwater for a while. I have a 125 gallon SA Cichlid tank, and a 55 gallon community tank. I researched thru books and the www (mostly here :) ) for about 6 months last year as I thought I wanted to turn my 125 into a reef. After looking into getting my tank drilled, and researching hang on overflows I decided converting the 125 wasn't worth the price.

I just bought a house, and have to move my tanks. Based on the floorplan, a corner tank would be perfect in the living room. I figured if I got a pre-drilled 92 gallon reef tank, I would be able to get 1 really good MH light (pendant), which alone would cut costs compared to the 4 I was considering getting for the 125. What do you think about a 92 gallon corner reef tank?

Had one, loved it. I'l only took it down so I could afford to put a 180 in my wall.
Cheers

I'd say that lighting a 92c is sketchy at best. If I was to do it, I would use either 3 250-400w bell pendants in a triangular formation (or even horizontal pendants, pfo mini pendants). 1 Halide won't cut it, you can get away with 1 on a 54c, but a 92c is about 4' long at its longest point. This is a bit too far for 1 halide lamp to cover. I would suggest the 3 pendants (BTW, you would only need 3 halides for your 125 also, not 4) first. We did hook a customer up with a sexy custom Hamilton dual HQI pendant with a spread good enough to keep the tank lit well. Good luck, it's a tricky tank to light because of it's odd shape. HTH

i set up my 92c about 6 months ago. i'm using 2 allglass 110w power compact fixtures, 1 sitting behind the other. , 50/50 bulbs (half white half actinic) totals 210w pc. i guess most would feel this is probably not enough but this is my first tank and so far so good. getting great coraline growth, corals are doing great.

Could I get away with only 1 MH light?

Maybe. I would look at the rectagular pendants made by PFO. The 400 watt Iwasaki with the mecury vapor ballast and 2x 28watt actinic PC's may be enough. It really depends on how well the light spreads across the tank. On the other hand, even if the sides of the tank are not that well lit, that might be ok so long as you keep the light-loving corals directly under the light.

Monkeyboy, I think you are smoking something.
On my 92 corner, I had a single 150W DE HQI fixture, and the tank did just fine. My maxima and deresa clams were as healthy as could be and showed a fair amount of growth.
Email me if you have any more questions, but I can't check it until Monday.
Regards
Jim
