Doing this thread to see how many of you other reefers in the Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois are interested in Getting South Down Tropical Play Sand for your aquariums. There are two of us that are trying to work a deal with Home Depot to get a several skids of SD in the Tri-state area. Problem is that they will not do it unless there is a big demand for it. They would need to order a truck load of the sand which round about 18 skids of the sand to do it though. There is something like 60+ bags on a skid. The areas were trying to get them to ship it to would be Fort Wayne Indiana’s 2 Home Depots stores along with one in Auburn Indiana, and a place or two in Ohio area. So what we are trying to do is find out how much of a demand there is for this stuff so we can pass the info on to them to hopefully push them to carry this brand of sand. I know many of you in this area are like us and always looking for it but cant ever seem to find it. So please post were your from and how many bags you would be looking for. Not saying that will be able make this happen but we are gonna really try to get it to work… I myself am looking on getting like 5 bags of it and the guy working with me is looking for 6 or so also

Thanks all

Hey Clownkeeper,

Cool idea. How much does a bag cost/ How many pounds in a bag?

I'm in Northwest, Ohio, Toledo suburb with one realtively new HD store right in town (Rossford, Ohio) and several located in Toledo proper. Are you saying we just need to get a total commitment which would then be divided up and delivered to the individual stores?

When I asked at my local store the other day, they didn't have the sku in their computer but said to check back in about 3 weeks when spring stuff starts to come in. So I don't know if we're already slated for some or not.

I live just west of Toledo and am getting ready to set up a 125. I would really like to get 10 - 15 bags of southdown. If you do work something out let me know! I'll even drive to Fort Wayne to pick it up.

centrek,

What's the expected cost / bag? How many pounds of sand / bag? Then I can let you know how many bags I'd want.

Thanks

it's the southdown sand....straight from Home Depot....but since they carry two types, the Blue bag of under the name of "Southdown" and the "Yardright Select Tropical Play Sand". I'm not sure which one we would get, but i'd try for the blue bag of Southdown for sure.
The Southdown bag is a 50lb bag at $4.99 each.
The Yardright is a 40lb bag at either $4.99 or $6.99, I've been quoted two different prices for that one.

But i'd try to get the Southdown brand, more sand, less money :) Seems like a good idea to me.

Sorry guys I havent checked this board in a few days but i see that Centrek has been on the ball cause i sure havnt.
Like he stated the Southdown brand or the yard right will cost anywere from 4.99 - 6.99 a bag which is a great deal if you compare it to the aragonite sand that your lfs carrys.

Supergenius74 Glad to see another Fort Wayne person into the hobby. We seem to be so far and in between around here. Or there is not intrest in chatting at the fish stores. Give me a shout if interested in meeting and sharing some information

I'm glad to see someone from ft. wayne too, I don't know of anyone around here into reef tanks besides the LFS people. I'd love to meet and share info, maybe even start a club if we found enough people. Send me a message and i will give you my number, maybe if we can get enough people together we can save some money, I've already got some good connections on a few things in this hobby. Anything beats going to that german guy, he's expensive! I just found a guy in the pedlers post the other day selling all his liverock out of his 200 gallon tank real cheap, he was located over by georgetown and i got a good deal on about 50 lbs worth. Anyway keep in touch. Shane

he is (was about 2 weeks ago) selling it for about 4-5 bucks a lb but its the good stuff, very porous, well cured lots of purple algae and some small coral here and there on it. same stuff the german guy over by zonlner sells for 8 bucks a lb. 50 lbs worth filled my 55 gallon tank.
