ok so i did something i never thought i would do. i strayed into an evil store today and got overwhelmed by the horror of their crappy tanks and had to rescue a fish. this thing was so bad looking they gave it to me for five bucks after my arguing that it would probably be dead tomorrow and then they would get nothing. it was real scrawny and breathing hard and resting on the bottom. i have always loved lunar's, i couldn't just let him die.
so i got it home and aclimated it slowly then dumped it in. he imediatly found a crack in some rockwork and stuffed himself in it not moving at all. not good i thought. i fed the tank shortly after and it ate some bloodworms and brine shrimp so i took that as a positive sign. it's respiration has slowed to a normal pace, but it dosn't seem to be picking up it's activity level. it will swim in open water every so often (my tang dosn't seem to appreciate his presence) but mostly it curls up in a crevice and sits there. it's still just the first day so maybee he is a little afraid of his suroundings. what do you guys think? i've always had healthy fish never had to nurse one to health. anything i should be aware of to bring this guy around?

Kudo for the rescue attempt :D

If its not harrassed by established residents, he should recover soon.
If there's constant aggression, the peace offered in the refugium will help.
Look out though as once he's settled down, get him accustom to the main thank before he deplete your pods.
If he's big, in no time, I believe he'll rule the pack

cheers

You might want to leave the lights off for a day or two. That might help him settle down a bit and keep him from getting picked on too badly.

Just an idea.

Personally, I don't agree with "rescuing" fish. Like has been said in numerous posts before, unless they just give you the fish, it's bad to do this. Now you've covered their costs on the lunar, encouraging them to order more. If it's a bad store, then make a big stink about the quality of the fish but you shouldn't encourage them placing orders by actually paying them for one of their hurtin' fish. Boycott the store, and tell them why.

Also, putting a blatantly unhealthy fish in your main aquarium is exceptionally risky, what if all the residents of your tank come down w/ something brought in by the lunar?

That said, i'd kill the lights for a few days like Louey reccomended. It really should be in a quarantine tank where you can monitor and treat it for any infection that may insue (or is already there). Just try and stuff it with food and be prepared to isolate any fish that decides they want to nibble. You may also want to try a medicated food to clear it of any intestinal parasites that may be there (since it was very skinny), Jungle makes one called Pepso food. HTH

yeah i know all the reasons why rescuing is bad, i don't even go to this store EVER because they are evil, but i was in the area and had time to kill and was just going to look. i argued with the manager, told him he ran an evil store, was a killer and i wouldn't ever buy anything from there. i said i would take the sick wrasse of his hands. he said he would give a small discount but that was it. i told him to **** off and asked him how he slept at night. as i was walking out a few minutes later he came up to me and said the best he could do was twenty bucks. i left fealing horrible because i knew i could bring it around, got a half mile down the road and then decided to go back and try to reason with him once more. i ended up leaving with it for five bucks, my regular non evil healthy fish store gets like $60 for these things so i cannot imagine he made money on me. it's been about 26 hours now and he seems to be doing much much better already. i know i took a risk, but my conciense wouldn't let me leave it to die, at five dollars i hope i didn't encourage him that it is a good way to make money. anyway now i know not even to look at other stores. except maybe your's monkeyboy arn't you in mass? how far a drive from nashua are you?

He didn't make money on it, but i bet he covered his cost on it.

What's the deal w/ $60 lunar wrasses? Those things are supposed to be cheap!!!
