I have to decide what I want but I don't understand the difference between a 8800k and 6700k. I know that number is because the wavelength or something like that. I have read a lot about that but my brain does not help me :lol: Please, just tell me what you might buy if you where in my place... I have xenias, torchs , hammers, clavularias, maxima clam, elegance, sponges, brains, leathers, bubble corals and mushrooms.... what do they prefer... 6700 or 8800 .... by the way my tank is 20 in deep.

its in my opinion that you'll have better results w/ the 8800k. i need say i've never owned these bulbs in the past, but again, its my opinion that 8800k are more like the varying spectrum that a coral may see on the submerged reef. i currently use 10k ushios w/good results, i am considering the move to 20k however.

the 8800k, if compareable in quality, should have a more intense blue spectrum than the 6700. this is important, when taking into consideration, corals live underwater and much of the intensity in the red,yellow,green part of the spectrum get filtered out at a much more rapid rate as you go deeper down the water column. BTW who makes the bulbs in question?

Thanks for your reply. it's a Customsealife PC bulb, by the way, I found a 10000 k for the same price, Do you think is better than the 8800k?

The higher in k u go, the closer u get to the white end of the specrum. If you have specimens like mushrooms, they like the light from fluorescent bulbs(actinctic). If you are using any fluorescent bulbs then u shouldn't need to go higher 6700. Although it doesn't hurt to have more light.

the white specrum is at about 450nm. starting from zero the more k the more white. at 10000k there will be more blue yes. IF you are using blue actinic lights then you don't need more blue spectrum from a mh, 6700 would be fine. 5500k is around the white specrum.

I think Luis is talking about PC bulbs. I had the 6700; the 8800 and the 10k ones. [Now have MH 10 k ushio:]

I found the 6700 to be on the yellow side similar to an Iwasaki MH bulb

My personal choice was the 10k- got best color out of corals. 8800 was fine as well, but I thought the bit more blue in the 10k helped. Was also running a row of acts at same time with both bulbs.

If you are only running PC bulbs, your Maxima will need to be near the top of the water column for max light. Plus it prefers to attach to rock.

now i'm not the best person to get into a debate regarding lighting, i know a little, but very little.

the white specrum is at about 450nm.

if this is true i know nothing

That's why I stop reading about light :? .... some authors talk about lumens others... armstrongs... Kelvins, watts,lux.... so I got very confused, then i decided to ask you guys. I'm talking about power compacts, it's time to change my bulbs because my corals are loosing the green color and the yellow (that's the sign to change my bulbs). About my clam; I used to have it right at the top in the rocks but she commited suicide several times (without success) so I leave it in my sand bed and she looks happy there (at least she can not jump from there 8O ), her colors still bright, you know she is a baby and I have read that they don't like to much light when young. Anyway, I will place my order until monday. By now based in your replies I think 10000K is the best option... am I right?

i still think so. the feedback you've gotten here sounds out of the ordinary to me. i've never even heard of a "white" spectrum. as i stated earlier i'm far from an expert, and i know better than to pass judgment on anothers post, but my inclination is the higher k value the more your aquarium simulates a deeper environment not a whiter one.
i guess thus far your decision relies on your visual preferance, as i beleive any of your proposed bulbs will suffice. i would and have expressed my opinions on the theory of the importance of a bluer spectrum.
it would be nice if we heard from a lighting guru. surprised one hasn't chimed in.

Well podman, since you seem to know little about lighting, maybe you will listen to what others know, or you can try to argue with what you don't.
In high school you might have heard about a phrase ROYGBIV. This would be called the specrum of light. red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. The specrum starts with infrared light and then moves into ultraviolet light. visible to the human eye is in the middle. Now, white would be a colour somewhere around the yellow specrum, correct?
sorry if I used a technical term like NM, it stands for Nano Metre.

sorry for the delayed reaction, long day. i didn't mean to ruffle your feathers ryan7, honestly. i have no desire to argue any specifics on the values of light either. i simply have never heard anyone use the term "white spectrum". furthermore i do know what a nano meter is, as i recall it is a measure of radiant energy, and your claimed 450 nm, is not even close to the yellow or "white" end of the spectrum. i would guess it to be in the violet spectrum as i beleive that to be on the edge of whats even visible.
now, as i stated earlier, i am no lighting expert, any of the above may be incorrect. light is a very complex form of energy, it has too many values for my feeble mind. but i would certainly have a civilized discussion w/you and we can start over. :) [/quote]

Light is a very complex form of energy, and different terms are thrown around somewhat. Futhermore, I do not intend to argue about lighting as well. I would much rather civilized chats about interesting fish or corals. I hope the postee isn't now more confused about what light to purchase. :) :)

O.K., time to throw some facts into this thread...

Color temperature is a way of describing the color of a light by comparing it to a glowing hot piece of platinum metal. Heat the metal and it begins to glow, first red then more yellow, and eventually even blue.

Note that there is white on the scale above, but that's just because of how I drew it. There technically is no white on a color temperature scale. I say technically because there is a shade of yellow at around 5500ºK that our eyes tend to interpret as white since we evolved in sunlight of this color. But it is actually yellow.

And comparison to the colors in the rainbow are not really appropriate either - there is no green on a color temp scale.

Color temperature is always measured in degrees Kelvin (or, more accurately, Kelvins, without the word "degrees"). The Kelvin scale is the temperature scale normally used in physical sciences like astronomy. It is like the more familiar Fahrenheit or Celsius scales, except 0º on the Kelvin scale is Absolute Zero - the temperature at which there is no heat energy left in an object.

So what color temperature do we want lighting our reef tanks? Well, the sun overhead at noon is yellow-white at about the 5500°K to 6500°K range. But "daylight" as we see it is a little more blue than that because of reflected light from the blue sky. Furthermore, red and yellow light do not penetrate water very well, making light underwater more blue.

So the easiest answer is "Somewhat more blue than 5500°K."

Color temperature is not a simple case of "higher is better" - lighting your tank with light that is too high in color temperature deprives the corals of energy in many of the color ranges needed for photosynthesis (photosynthesis in reality is not this simple - there are a wide range of photosynthetic symbiants in coral and each one has a different mix of photosynthetic pigments, each of which responds to a different color range.)

So, all that being said, there are two important "gotchas" -

1) Color temperature represents a continuous spectrum of colors. Any given color temp, be it 4000ºK or 10,000ºK is a mix of all the colors in the rainbow (yes, even green), but with a characteristic curve peaking at a certain wavelength. Color temp is a valid measure of the color of any continuous specturm source like an incandescent light. Makes sense if you think about it - color temp is the temperature you heat a glowing piece of metal to, and an incandescent bulb works by means of a glowing metal filament. Color temperature does not accurately describe the color of an emmision spectrum. Emmision spectra result from photons emmited by the electons in an excited gas. All of the light energy is concentrated into a few discrete wavelengths instead of being a mix of all colors. Examples of lighting that produce emmision spectra include: You guessed it - Metal Halide and Fluorescent! So when you see the color temperature specified for one of these bulbs it means absolutely nothing. It's just the marketing manager's opinion of what will make the bulb sell. This is why we can have 8 different 10,000ºK bulbs in this hobby, all with different colors - none of them are actually 10,000ºK, or any other color temp for that matter.

2) In general, the higher the color temp rating, the lower the intensity. So in many cases a yellower bulb will be better for your corals due solely to the increased intensity.

Yellow is more like 550nm.

Whoa, back to the origional question. If you've ever seen 8800k and a 6700k CSL pc's lit next to eachother the difference is minimal. The 6700k will have slightly more intensity, but that would be splitting hairs. 6700's, 8800's, and 10000k's will all look nice when mixed with an actinic.

My choice would be a 6700k, although any of them would be almost the same thing.
