Any body know of a hang on filter or something to clean up the water surface. If you get down and look up through the water (both tanks, 100g and 46g) the water surface looks covered (except where powerhead is)with a white film, or realy looks like very small specks of dust or something. I know it has to block a lot of light.

You may also want to look at an overflow box. This will skim the gunk of the surface of the water.

When I used to have my 55gal sumpless, I would just set a papertowel on the surface once or twice a week. It doesn't take but about 30secs for it to become damp and suck all the protein film off the surface.

When I didn't have an overflow, I did the same thing with a newspaper page. Just lay it on as much surface as you can for 1-2 seconds and it will absorb lots of organics. Or get an overflow!

I'm using a Eheim Surface Skimmer, very effective for me. But I think it would needs to hook up with an external canister filter.

I noticed I had the same problem yesterday. I just pointed my return flows a little higher, causing more surface water agitation and the overflow box did the rest.
