Just picked up a purple tang for the reef and thought it was totally healthy and disease free in the store. Sure enough when I dropped him in the tank, he started to scratch from time to time. Not too worried at this point as reefs work wonders on sick fish but I have been hearing a lot of talk about garlic as a cure for ich. So last night I soaked some frozen food in garlic saturated water and he loves it. So whats the scoop on garlic? Is soaking enough or do I need to start feeding him cloves

I used garlic extract ( oily substance) and soaked their food. The infected fish made noticable progress.

I know you have heard this before, but........................

Quarantine all new fish in a seperate tank for 3-4 weeks BEFORE placing them into a reef tank.
This becomes more and more important the more fish are in your reef.
You don't want an Ick outbreak caused by one impulse-buy fish to wipe out your 6 other fish, some of which you may have had for years.

I realize this QT process is a pain in the butt, and I didn't do it myself years ago, but I learned the hard way.

What's done is done. Not point in preaching the QT any further.

And to your question about feeding cloves? I don't believe that that will be necessary. Im not even sure if the tang would eat the clove anyway, but then again, I've never tried it. Keep soaking the food in garlic extract. Hopefully, your PT will come around in short order.

Good luck!

The cloves will float up to the surface and get washed down the overflow anyway. Besides, I doubt your tangs will want to chew on the garlics.

Judging on human reactions, if your PT is a male, it may do other wonders too...........

Maybe he has never heard the QT preach.

If he did it obviously didn't sink in.

Continue the garlic extract treatment for 30 days even if you see improvement. Feed only garlic extract foods (dry as it absorbs more) as the idea is to get as much garlic extract in the fish as possible.
In the future treat all new fish with garlic extract as an ich preventative.
The fish will love the bits of cloves if you choose to make your own extract. Avoid them falling on coral as they may irritate some of them.

keep feeding food soakedwith garlic concentrate a week or so after all the ich is gone from all the fish. It worked well in my reef tank. I did it few times as I never listened about the quarantine either.
