Do not get discouraged if answers don't come quickly. Not everyone reads this forum each day. There are some very good clam people here.

Let me ask a couple questions, understand my clam knowledge is limited.

How long have you had this clam?

Have you examined it before the lights come on in the morning, looking for small snails, usually the size of grains of rice?

The hinge is damaged. Is tissue missing, eaten away? Or is part of the shell broken?

Have you recently added any livestock?

These might help someone more knowledgable help you with your clam.

Good Luck.

The second snail you mentioned, did you add it to the tank or did it just show up? and does it look like this?

In all my years of keeping clams I have never seen a clam with a hinge broken, I have seen shells cracked by mantis shrimp though. I don't think that snails could damage the hinge but I do think that a fall off a rock or a mantis could. Does the clam still open all the way? If not it could still be due to pests. Do both halves of the shell match up? If not then the hinge sounds like it's damaged. If the hinge is damaged badly then the hopes for survival are low, if it's just a little scared the clam could come back from it.
