I had some questions about what filtration is really needed for a reef tank. I currently have a 40g with a skimmer and a power filter on the back. Two powerheads with undergravel filters and a 3rd that is for the water movement.

I am setting up a 75g hexagon tank right now and hope to have it up and running to replace the 40 in the next 4 weeks. I am building the stand and the canopy right now.

What I have planned for the new tank is a to use a silent one pump to pump the water thruough the substrate and have it pass through the uv sterlizer and back to the tank. I will have some powerheads inside of the tank moving the water around so that there are no dead spots. I am limited on the space under the tank and cannot fit a sump underneath. If is crucial to have a skimmer and any other filters for a reef tank,I want to make sure that I do not leave anything out. I am debating locating a sump next to the tank in a "chest" looking cabinet to conseal it. I have a salt tank right now with a 65w PC and a few corals, they do not seem to last very long and want to move fully into the reef side. I just got my 175w MH with a 32w PC for the lighting setup and I think that will solve my coral problem.

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appricated.

Thanks.
