The only thing I'm going to question at the moment is those 6 x 1" holes. Why are they only 4" up from the bottom? Are you not planning to use a DSB, if so, they will get covered????? You might want to look into this and discuss this a bit further before they drill any hole sin the glass.

Spar vanish works on boats so it should protect your stand. That's what I used when I built my oak stand -not that i'm messy when I'm playing in the tank or anything...

Hi again,

I put them there(look at jeff hoods tank on first page) because I will use pvc and flex pvc to get the flow where I want it(No power heads) and I want the pvc going along the bottom to be covered up by the dsb.

I will use a good boat varish then. :)

Keep the advice coming :)

I decided on a trapaziod(spelling) overflow in the back center 18" wide on the back, 5" out from the back, 12" wide on the front of the overflow with both front edges going on angles to the back.

The overflow has 2-1" drains and 2-3/4" returns. Should I have gone bigger?

-Steve, how many GPH do you plan to run on your return?

Hi,

Well I would like a turnover of about al least 5x-7x through the overflow. I will also have 2 closed loops turning over 5-7x themselves.

The tank is 300g.

In my 150g I had I have one 1' overflow and was pushing 5x turnover in that.

I was thinking of 2 1 1/4" drain and 2-1" returns but I do not know if they will fit

From looking at what you want your overflow to do, you will need enough to flow 1500 to 2000 gallons per hour.

Now a lot depends on the cross sectional area Tenecor makes your overflow slots when it comes to how much total water your overflow can handle.

For instance, my external overflow is roughly two feet long each. The slots are around 1/2 inch wide and 1.5 inches or so tall. I don't remember the spacing but each overflow allows a max flow of around 1800 to 2000 gallons per hour. The rate limeting step is not the drain holes but the slots in the back wall.
If your overflow has a 12 inch front and roughly 7.5 inch sides Your total run of overflow is 27 inches. If the overflow teeth are like mine then you would have a max flow of around 2025 gph. Now this will vary with the design of your overflow teeth but should be close.

You really don't want to keep your overflow maxed out all the time because you will have no reserve and the slightest clog will flood your room.
Tenecor knows how to figure what the flow of that overflow is so just ask them what the total is and make your decision on pumps, etc... On my overflow I went with overkill with the drains and it was not needed. My water level in my overflows is only an inch or two and I am pushing around 3500 gph via two 2 foot overflows.

Just some thoughts.

I might recommend 1.5" overflow.... it will allow you to process a lot more water than the 1" (max of about 800 gal/hr each). I cannot remember the amount the 1.5" can do, but its considerably more.... if there's room in the overflow for 1.5" bulkheads (the additional size of the flange) and you can still have it changed, go for it now....

I have no web site. I think that is my attempt to show you pics. I will continue to work on the camera and tonight I will post details of the tank. Thanks for the comments! Russ

Guys- I was up at Russ's house on Saturday night looking at this baby. It's pretty impressive and by summer once the corals have taken off it will be phenomenal!

I've always been a lover of sandbeds - however Russ sunk his tank into the wall and the sandbed is hidden it was a very nice effect that we don't really get otherwise. It makes you feel like you really are diving on a reef. Having the waterline above your head helps too

Even got to test the back up generator since someone slammed into a light pole nearby.

Here's mine, there's been some major changes though. I had 2 crashes, and the reef itself has since been torn down, and re-done, but the wall structure was not touched

And here's one with a behind scenes picture, the grow-out tank and refugium have been removed since

Hey Derek, I'd recognize that tank anywhere. :) Not sure if you remember me or not, but we met at Tropicorium about 2 years ago along w/ Patrick, Keith Clark, and Todd Crail. What happened to that huge leather you had in tthe tank that had those clowns hosting in it?

Mustang: How are those pseudo-reeftec / tunze water pumps working for you? I see you've got two on that tank.

Here is a new picture that I promised. This tank is 500 gal with a 180 gal sump and a 80 gal refugium. There is a total of about 13000 gal/hour water turnover. The entire back of the tank is one large overflow with 2-2" drains to the sump. There is 2 punps that intake directly out of the bottom of the overflow and recirculate behind each liverock pile. There is approximately 2000 watts of lighting over the main tank and 150 watts over the refugium. There is a 1hp inline chiller that maintains the temp at about 82 degrees. The protein skimmer is an Aerofoamer driven by a seperate Iwaki pump. Two Koralin Kalcreactors maintain calcium and alkalinity. There is approximately 5 inches of sand and 250 lbs. of liverock. The chunk of Tonga in the middle weighed 59lbs! I would be happy to answer any questions and if you are local, come see it! Cheers! Russ

Liquid, So far so good the shaft has algae on them now so I can't tell if the rust has gotten any worse. I think I need to take them out and clean them. and see how the shafts are doing. Also one is vibrating a little I think it might be the algae

I do know one thing they move a lot of water
It took the tank a week to settle after I added them with the sand moving around

MickAv8r, I did the same type of thing with my sand bed I have 6"-8" of sand but set the stand so you only se about 3" or so I felt this way the DSB doesnÂ’t overwhelm the tank
