I was just at the petstore and they have a yellow knobby cucumber there. It is the kind that clean the sand. they don't know what kind it is but it cost 10.00 compared to their 30.00 tiger-tail. I really want one but I would like to know what kind it is and a good story or two about experience with one.

Please let me know if any of you can tell me about it.

Thanks,

Andy

AWD, there are many different colors of sand sifting cukes from the Caribbean. If you are sure that this one is a sand sifter then I would have no problem purchasing it.

Is it the kind that looks like a 1-3" blob of mustard? I've never owned one, but I've also never seen one on the sand. My impatiens climbs the rocks from time to time but spends most of his time on the sand. I've only seen those guys on rocks.

Yes, it is the mustard colored thing. I only know what I see. I believe it is the sand kind because it doesn't have the finger-like projections.

So, what does it do on the rocks? This topic doesn't seem to interest many people.

Yeah, this isn't really a cutting edge topic is it? As far as what they do on the rock, I really don't know. I don't think that they're capable of much more than eating and reproducing.

If the cuke is on the rocks, it is generally a filter feeder and not a sand sifter. If it was a sand sifter, it should have been on the sand. Both forms have tentacles, but they can be retracted. The form of these tentacles is different in filter feeders versus sand sifters. In dealer tanks, the cucumber may be on the glass or someplace high where it can extend its tentacles into the current.

This is the typical bright yellow cucumber in the trade: Colochirus robustus It is not, however, from the Caribbean, and it is not a sand sifter.
