Expensive and small volume make it unattactive. What size tank would be hanging this on?

I have a twenty long plumbed into my 75 and I barely spent $125 including fauna and flora kit from Inland Reef. The bigger the refugium the better! Some folks around here have sumps that are bigger than their displays! Gary Thomas is trying to convince the Misses that he needs a 1000G sump. Of course he has an 11 foot long tank that is over 500G.

If you have no altenative, then that hang-on fuge would be better than nothing. But then how do you light it? Macro algea need light to survive. Do you have pendent lighting?

Tell us more about your setup!

I got 72G bowfront . I was looking at 24" large size on the link. If that dont come with the lights then I do have my own lights.

My lights will be sitting on 6" top of aquarium 2x250MH, 2x55W Actnic.

I also have a 24" hood with 2x55W 10000k/actnic in them.

Also have a 29g empty tank ( can i use this to make a refugium out of it and if so where to buy the kit to do all the work).

I do have space under my stand to put a refugium also.
Are there any refugium out there which I can just buy and plumbed them under the stand. What kind of lights do they need.

Thanks,

Do you have a sump under there too? If you do, buy bulkhead fittings and connect the fuge it the sump. Then and another return pump in you fuge to pump water back into the tank. There are a millions ways to connect a sump/fuge. I threw this out to get you some ideas.

My sump is next to my tank on it's own stand. I teed of my tanks main return pump to send about 20% of the flow to my fuge. I drilled the fuge and basically made it a reef ready tank using acrylic sheet that were cut at a local plastic store. I let gravity return to water to the sump. I used clear flexable hose and barbed fittings combined with PVC and ball unions to control the amount of flow. I works pretty well.

I'll leave the lighting up to others. I have a 65W PC over my fuge. I think that is the minimum amount I would reccomend. My twenty is 1/2 full of sand, so I can get away with less light.

purigen? is that like chemi-pure?

i would try to talk you out of using that if you were asking advice on it.

so, i would put as large of a sump/ refugium under that tank as i could. you have plenty hanging on the back of that tank as it is. ( i have a HO skimmer as well)

your 29g will work. if it is glass, all you need to do to it is simply have somebody cut you a piece of acrylic (or DIY, it will be a snap) that will dam one end from the other. cut some kind of strainer section in the top area and glue it in the tank. leave enough room for a submersible pump in one end and you're done. buy yourself a pump and if you really don't wanna pipe anything, buy some hose and barb fittings.

you'll need a valve and some type of overflow (unless you got the predrilled 72g? in which the predrilled will simplify it even more.

more good news, you will be able to place your heater down there.

or you can blow another hundred on what i view as an inferior method.

Yes purigen is kind of chem-pure. I am using it for carbon I have heard that it dont put any phosphate in the tank and it is very pure much better then using black carbon. OR may be u knew some thing which i dont.

My 72G is not drill.
From where I can get Arcylic (home depot)
So u are saying cover the top of the tank with Arcylic, cut a piece on the top to fit a PVC (outflow from the tank) into the tank. Put a pump (mag5)
and attach the pump output to a PVC back to the display tank.

May be I can buy a CPR overflow to get the water from the display tank.

Is any one has any pic anywhere to give me some idea how it looks like.

Thanks.

chemi-pure is carbon, sorry, i was thinkin' chemigone.

yeah that is okay, ignore my stupidity :D

i was saying you could divide the 29g with the acrylic, the top would be covered with whatever it came with or nothing at all. the water from the refugium would cascade over this divider into the sump area with your mag pump.

just a word in advance.. i don't hear great things about the cpr overflow. a friend has one and hasn't had any complaints but there are some sore words on the BBs about 'em.

thanks.
