Just received my Tunze Turbelle Stream pump model 6110 with single controller from Champion. I love it! I mounted it against the back corner of my 6' X 4' X 36" tall tank. It is blowing across the top of the reef diagonally to the opposite corner. It creates amazing flow. They are absolutely correct in saying that it has high flow with no "blast" effect. I have it set such that there is high flow (?12,000 lph or 3000 gph) for 5 seconds and then lower flow for another 5 seconds. Just like wave action. Hopefully, it does not die within a few months like most of the powerheads that I have used in the past. Interestingly, which I did not know when I bought it, is that the propulsion is created by a little propellor blade, unlike the impellor in most other powerhead type pumps. It is like a mini, encased electric trolling motor. So far, I would highly recommend it for those of you that want to spend about $350. It is much better than 10 RIO's, believe me!!

PS. I do not work for Tunze or Champion Lighting, and am not an investor in those companies either.

Ouch, 350 for one setup?

I was just looking on the german Ebay site, they are going for 250 $ with controller there, 600 $ for the dual setup, different line voltage though..

I have been running mine for about 3 weeks and am very happy with it. I would not recommend this pump for a tank under 5' however if you have a DSB.

Do you guys think the duel setup with the surge programing coming in Jan will be too much for my 500 gallon tank. I feel I need more current towards the top of my tank where most of my SPS are growing.

Tank dimentions, 84x40x40

Texman, Is your tank Acrylic? How did you hang them and can you show a pic if possible. I have a acrylic top plate on my tank that prevents me from hanging it on the edge of the tank like the pictures show.

Thanks

I plan on using 4 in my 500s Jeff. I don't think you can have too much turbulence or flow. I think the sandbed will eventually settle down and form to the currents.

-IMO they will be perfect for your tank Jeff, you won't believe the difference they will make.

-Tunze has a special bracket for this Jeff.

Jeff,

I do have a tenecor acrylic tank with a huge lip (8-10" all the way around) I was thinking very hard about how to mount the damn thing since even the acrylic attachment kit is inappropriate. As I was staring at the back corner of my tank which is almost impossible to reach, even with one hand, I noticed that in my previous wisdom, I had run several 1" pipes down each back corner, which feed various jets throughout the tank from one of my return pumps. The pipe is rigidly fixed at the top, by a bulkhead fitting. I simply strapped the bracket that comes with the Turbelle, against the pipe using two heavy cable ties. It works like a charm. In your case, I would suggest drilling a hole in the top lip, big enough to fit at least a 3/4" bulkhead fitting. Simply attach a 6" piece of pipe to the fitting and strap your Turbelle onto it. It really is not that much of any eye sore. If you put the pipe within reasonably easy reach of the edge, you should have no trouble removing and cleaning the pump. I will take a picture for you - don't mind the algae though - I am working on it.

Similar question here....I've got (will have shortly) a 375 gallon tank, 96x30x30 with a DSB. I have ordered two 1" Sea Swirls, do you think these provide better flow than SS's?

Mike,

In terms of flow, it really depends on what you have that is pushing water through the sea swirls, although the maximum flow rate through a 1" sea swirl is 1500 gph (I think that is what the warning label says, although I am sure you could push more through without exploding it) The nature of the output is also different. The SS is nice in that it is constantly changing the direction of flow, and thus you can sweep across your reef. I have a 1" SS with an Iwaki 55 behind it. The jet coming out of the SS is quite tight, however, and does tend to "blast" whatever it is hitting at the time. The turbelle flow is much wider and thus has less velocity at the same output level. It's flow can also be varied from low to high by controlling the speed of the motor. If I were to use only one of these devices, it would be hard for me to decide which one is better. I always thought that the sea swirl was awesome, but so is the turbelle.
