My Cal. has been at or about 375 for a while now and I am going to drip Kalk in my tank this weekend to try and raise it to 400/450 ideally. I have heard of pH rising as a result of adding Kalk. are there other things that I should be aware of as I go about this endeavor.

The PH will rise dramatically if added quickly. I bought a PH monitor which gives me piece of mind when adding. Be sure to allow the Kalkwasser to sit until it clears after mixing then slowly drip. Do not add any of the milky leftovers that lay on the bottom!!

Do you keep it dripping all day and night or do you run a spot check until desired levels are reached.?

I use both B-Ionic and Kalkwasser drip in my 75gl. For the kalkwasser, I keep a 2.5gl water bottle with the kalkwasser in my stand connected to a litermeter doser that runs 24/7. A litermeter can be set to drip a maximum overal amount in a 24hr period, besides being set for amount per minute. Therefore, I initially turn it on the at night so that based upon the amount set per minute, the amount is slowly dripped in overnight and hits the maximum by about noon as the lights are coming on. At the end of the 24hr cycle, say at about 10pm as the actinic lights go off, the litermeter starts the next 24hr cycle and begins dripping the kalkwasser again. This was worked very well for me and my corraline is doing very well.

Thanks , I don't have a doser and plan to control the drip with an IV drip that I purchased at a medical supply store. I will be monitoring the pH and Cal levels as I start this eve

What are the specs of your tank? I've been dosing Kalk in my top-off on my 190g and haven't seen any change in pH. I dose about 1.5g a day with 1.5 TSP per gallon of water.

I've started dripping the Kalk @11 AM. the same time my actinic came on. I mixed one teaspoon of Kalk to one Gal. of H2O. I am currently dripping every 3 sec. into my 40 brd. My MH don't go on until 3 PM. should I check my pH before the MH come on or should I wait. As far as checking the Cal. level should I also wait until the MH go on.?

I havn't noticed that calcium will affect pH.
But i have noticed that you must monitor your kH when you add calcium.
(the following statment is not supported by any other evidence, other than my own thoughts of what I thought I read somewhere)
kH is needed to absorb the calcium into the water, and the more calcium you add the less your kH will read.
If your going to start dosing calcium, make sure it also contians the kH buffer with it.

Perhaps the Kent Liquid reactor would be the way to go for a 40 gal tank.

good luck raising calcium with kalkwasser, maintaining is one thing, raising is quite a bit different.

unless you have 0 calcium load in the tank

I'm not sure what kH vs Alk means, or how to figure.
But, they both seem low.
I would add the Liquid reator, I found it works the best for raising both.

>a tank that regularly registers @375Cal

leave it alone, 375 is plenty high, it's not going to be a limiting factor

I would dose kalk anyway, just to maintain the ca where it's at
