This was yesterday, my third split from this anemone. I had to work and missed the actual event but seing it in the morning I new it was coming.
Please comment do you like the pictures. Seems BTA splittings are coming more and more common although it seems this praticuler one splits very often. I got it in a trade with SeaMac and his hae had lots of splits.

Wow, very cool!! Judging by the size of those green star polyps the BTA wasn't very big when it split. What do you feed it, and do you have any clones for sale???

In my understanding there are two types of BTA's one that stays small and one that grows much larger. I believe I read this in TRA vol 2. In any case yes the anemone was only a few inches at best. None of them seem to grow much larger then this before they split. In Chris's (SeaMac) tank they are the smae way but he has many more then I so for a clone you'd be better off emailing him. I am sure you can get his email off here or reefcentral. Although we are on the east coast so shipping would be $.

Oh well, it was just a halfhearted effort anyway. My clowns are too big for those guys and they're not nice to BTAs. Do you sell them back to the LFS or just keep them all?? Must be nice, I can't wait until my rose BTA splits so I can make the outrageous price back :D

I've heard this too, and it definitely sounds like you've got the first one!

Hi Ben,

Looking good! Glad to hear you are having good luck with the anemones as well! Did you ever get the clowns to pair up?

Maybe we can get together for a trade sometime soon? I don't have much new in the way of SPS (that I didn't get from you) except for a fluorescent green hydnophora rigida frag. Let me know if you are interested...if not, I'll get back in touch when I have some new corals to trade. :)

8O Ummm......isn't that the dreaded "mojano" anemone??? I've been fighting those things for years!!! They are VERY VERY prolific and they squeeze out and sting other corals. Not good in my opinion for a community reef tank. Did you buy one of the anemones or did it come in on some live rock?

Nope...its an E. quadricolor aka bubbletip anemone. The bubbles are deflated in Ben's pic, which typically happens when they are getting ready to or are in the process of splitting. That is exactly what happens with the clones that I have...which you would expect, since Ben's and my anemones are clones from the same parent. The tips are typically much more inflated, and mine plays host to skunk clown...not a natural pairing, but cute nonetheless. ;)

Ok...then...Wow!! nice anemones!!!!

They do look like the Mojano anemones though right? How do you tell the difference?

A.mojano is smaller. But yes it has a similar appearance. They even get bubbletips sometimes.

I'm going to bring it up again... those look ALOT like majano anemones... based on size. A LFS here has an infestation that is so bad its killing off just about everything.... I'd be very certain that you have E quads...

How do you know they are bubble tips?

I do agree that they look somewhat similar to the majano anemones, but I wouldn't be able to prove that they were definitely majano anemones. Does anyone know the specific characteristics/criteria I should look for to distinguish between the two? As I mentioned before, the picture that Ben has posted is not representative of what the anemones look like on a daily basis...that is how they appear when they are splitting. If I had a way to post a picture of my clones it would probably help...they look identical to the pictures of BTAs in Wilkerson's "Clownfishes". :)

In addition, I've given away a half dozen of these anemones, and several of the people with whom I've traded have told me that the anemones have grown upwards of 6 inches in their tanks without splitting. To my knowledge, this is not characteristic of majanos. I have also had several clones in my tank reach 4" or more in size before splitting.

There used to be a great picture of them on one of the reef boards...I searched for it last night and couldn't find the one I was remembering. Maybe one of you guys will have better luck, or maybe one of the heavyweights will weigh in on the subject. :D

I'll also try to borrow a digital camera this weekend to take a picture of mine. ;)

Although mojanos may be able to "split" like this (I don't know if they can or not), when I had them I found they reproduced by pedal laceration.

FWIW,

Are the three pictures taken in succession?
I am not trying to give you a rough time but rather very interested!
The first picture was at 8:45pm, the second 12:45 pm but I think you mean 12:45 am being 45 minutes after midnight correct? The third at 12:00 pm being noon correct?

These are definiatly E. Quadricolors, unless the mojanos play host to clowns as well. I have one in anouther tank with a maroon clown that paired up. My pair of Ocellaris's occasionaly swim in them as well but host in a large colt coral.

Seamac, the clowns never mated, maybe never will. They still play the mating games quaking at each other and such but never made it to the mating stage yet. I may have a few frags ready in a few weeks, I just traded with Greenmariner who said he was at your house earlier that day. He saw the anemones and said(are those from Chris?) :) Ill shoot you an email when Im ready.

John, the first was at noon then at 12:45 pm (afternoon) then at 8:45pm I had to go to work so missed the actual event again but I dont think my boss would appriciate me calling out because I wanted to stay home and watch the split. I called out a week before to wait for a clam shipment so this would be pushing it. I wish I could have done total successive pictures that would have been cool.

Ben,

I too am amazed that your BTA would split at such a small size. Judging from the star polyps and other corals in the picture the BTA would appear to be 50 cent to silver dollar size. What is your best guess at their actual diameter at the time of the splitting?

I would guess it was 1/12 to 2" when it split. I feed them every other day with krill so maybe they split so often because of the havy feeding? Dont know but they never seem to get much larger then this before they split for me. I will post a whole tank picture soon!

Check out this guy, my Stichodactyla Gigantea Some of these pictures are a year or so old--when fully extended, the oral disc is about 15" across. It's currently hosting a mated pair of maroon clowns. (The Stichodactyla Gigantea is not usually a host to the maroon clown.)

(In this 3rd picture, the anemone is ingesting a prawn shrimp.)
