One of the most awesome reefs I've seen is the one at Upscales, here pictured on Ken Hahn's reefcorner:
http://www.reefcorner.com/upscales.htm

What makes it look so cool is the intense encrusting stuff thats all over the rock. I emailed them last year and they said it was no problem, the sps holds its own...

In my own experience I've found both standard mushrooms and green star polyps to be problems. The mushroom burns everything and the GSP grows over stuff. And Xenia elongata also...

I've seen people saying that zooanthids are a problem but mine never grew all that fast and I don't know if they would burn sps or not.

Any suggestions on benign encrusting specimens? I know ricordea are good...Tubipora musica? Any others?

Yeah, I have xenia and anthelia that are both starting to really take off. If I want it somewhere in my tank, I just take a small encrusted rock and place it next to glass or a new rock. Within a week there's enough grown on it to separate with a razor blade. Hopefully I can sell it at some point!! GSPs are also really cool. I had some in the past that spread a lot and could take just about any current, even growing right in front of the powerheads.

No, I've just seen it on the net. Does it still look as good?

With xenia you can either cut it and toss it down the toilet or frag it with crazy glue for credit at the LFS.
