I've done a little research before I got my new tank on morays. My original plan was to keep a moray and a Bamboo shark in my 190. But with the lack of rock work in my tank I decided not to go down that road (this was 2 months ago). Well with the death of my shark I have decided to investigate morays again. Today I added about 15 pounds more rock (fully cured at LFS) to my tank to give more hiding places (and doing a couple water change to get rid of any left over curing of the rock).

I've looked into Zebra morays and Snowflake morays. From my research both morays are acceptable with smaller (clown sized) fish. The Zebra grows fairly large but from my reading it would be ok in my size tank, and the snowflake will stay smaller then the Zebra.

Any other "fish safER" morays?

I've also already covered my tank with a plastic mesh before I bought my shark so my tank is "sealed."

Sorry Jason, I can't help you information-wise. You did mention crowd-pleasing in another thread and I think the snowflakes are about the coolest thing I've seen in an aquarium :D .

Anything in the Echidna genus is a good choice i.e. Snowflake, Banded, or Chainlinks, however Banded's are relatively reclusive. Gymnothorax millaris is another good selection.

Also, the only moray that has ever bitten me was a Snowflake. My vote is with the Zebra. That lovely cocoa brown striped in pure white, not to mention their fantastic personalities. A fish with a personality cannot be much cooler. You could put in a Sweetlips or something similar that is peacable, hardy (relatively so, anyway), but showy.

Zebras rock, although you may have a hard time finding a small one. Most of the ones that I have seen for sale have been about a foot and a half already. Have never seen anything smaller than that.

Very true...I looked for a small Zebra about a month ago, and could only find ones larger then a foot.

Snowflakes, chainlinks, and zebra morays are you're best bet. I keep a med/large dragon with a medium size whitemouth, both are very handsome eels but can only be kept with larger fish that wont become dinner. Whitemouths are several hundred dollars cheaper than dragons and fairly common, they get to about 40" and aren't as aggresive as dragons.

Was at my LFS today and asked them to check for Zebra's next time they go down to the Wholesalers and he said he would give me a great deal on a Golden Moray. He is supposed to call me tomorrow with a quote on both.

Besides the fact that I've seen them going for $300, are gorgeous (yellow with black spots) and they have a pointed mouth...meaning they are built to eat all the fish in my tank...right? I'm still leaning towards Zebra. What are everyone’s opinions on the Golden Moray. I also recall from my reading that these eels grow rather big.

PS, what is a reasonable price for a Zebra. I asked him to look for one 1'-1.5'. I'm thinking in the $50-75 range.

I charged 100 for a 2.5 footer, so I think that's a reasonable price. Ditto on zebras being awesome, although you'll be able to find snowflakes cheaper and smaller. I saw one the other day that was about the size of a pencil. Cute! BTW Jason, sorry to hear about your shark :( Do you have any other fish in this tank?

Jason, my LFS always has a good selection of eels. In fact, I just picked one up a few days ago. It is a white eyed eel. Maybe we can plan a trip this sat.

Large Clown (first fish I ever bought, 3-4 years old), a Green Cromis that somehow hid in a rock when breaking down my 60g tank, and a Male Blue Jaw Trigger (very good community fish).

I will probably add a Sohal Tang in the near future, maybe a female Blue Jaw if I can find one, and Zebra Eel :D

Which one? They have a bunch of them. You mean the Tessalata Eel with the Nurse shark? If so, yes that Eel is awesome, but he is HUGE and would defiantly eat all my fish and maybe my hand!

Once again I'm gonna really push for the Zebra. I've had to move way too many pissed off Snowflakes, yeah, they are beautiful. But morays, to those unaccustomed to handling them, are DAMN scary. If you treat the thing right, a Zebra can literally become a pet. They tolerate handling like no other aquatic animal (turtles and the such notwithstanding) I've ever had the pleasure of interacting with.

The Golden is another beautiful animal, but then I even like the Wolf Eels--I swear they have faces--ugly as they are, and talk about a big ol' piece of meat! Yeah, since they have to be hand-fed (the ones I help care for) it's way skeejy to have those big things come right up to your face and beg for food. But they grow on ya, ya know?

By "treating the thing right" what do you mean? Don't bother it, read it stories before it goes to bed, feed it the neighbors cat? :D
